MAJOR SPOILERS FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING

THE GOOD
- I really, really, really like this game's aesthetic. The designs, the colours, the minigames. The presentation of everything in the game is just lovely.
- Greg and Bea are very interesting and well developed characters.
- I also really like the uh... the umm... hang on, I'll think of something....... Nope, guess not. On to the bad.
THE BAD
- Im gonna be blunt, Mae is the worst part of Night in the Woods. It's really hard to take her problems seriously when most of them stem from her being a violent prick who doesn't care. I spent most of the game excited to see this flawed character get developed into something greater, but she never does. Mae starts the game as a self centred child in an adult's body and ends the game a self centred child in an adult's body.
- The ending is horribly anti-climactic. And yeah, I see what they're going for. The goal seems to have been for the characters and town to be the real meat of the game, with the story and mystery being set dressing to give our characters something to do, but ultimately, I feel like this approach just fell flat on it's face. It doesn't work. What's the point of a big mystery if it doesn't go anywhere and doesn't have any real conclusion?
- Even ignoring the anti-climactic ending, the story just isn't very well structured. Nothing really happens until the final act, where the game decides to haphazardly dump all it's cards onto the table, then leaps out the window and shatters every bone in it's body for no apparent reason.
- Most of the dream sequences are boring and feel like they only exist to pad runtime.
- Ima be real, if I found out that my childhood friend got kidnapped and fed to an eldritch horror by a cult, I think I would have had a slightly more intense response than "oh man, the cult killed Casey, that sucks dude".
- The writing varies from 'actually pretty funny' to '2014 tumblr humour' at the drop of a hat. Some missions are hilarious, others get the tumblr humour. Try your luck.
FINAL THOUGHTS
A lot of my favourite games are ones that I played at the perfect time in my life for them to make the biggest possible emotional impact on me. Night in the Woods is the opposite of this, because I would have fucking loved this game when I was 16, but as a old, senile 22 year old, oh my god, I do not care.
Should you play this game? Probably. Everyone else seems to have liked it. I'm very much in the minority here.
