So, I recently finished this game on stream and, at the same time, rewatched the first Blair Witch Project movie (1999). So now it’s time to talk about the game. Took me about 7 hours to beat it - and that’s with getting lost in the damn forest a bunch of times, ‘cause it’s ridiculously easy to lose your way in there.
The game was made by the Polish studio Bloober Team - same guys behind Layers of Fear, The Medium, and the Silent Hill 2 Remake. And yeah, you can definitely feel the indie vibe in some spots, but overall, it turned out to be a really atmospheric, intense, and sometimes trippy experience.
There’s way more content here than in the first movie. The film was basically people running around in the woods with some tense moments. The game, though, gives you a personal story, more supernatural stuff, and a bunch of freaky events to deal with.
One thing I liked is the non-linear approach. There are two endings (maybe a bit more if you count minor story changes). I ended up with the bad one, which turns out to be the canon ending. Getting the good one apparently requires playing a completely different way — which honestly sounds like a solid reason for a second run.
As for the creepy atmosphere, tension, and mind games — they nailed it. The ending hits hard, even made me jump a couple of times. Though, to be fair, I’d trim down the action in the finale a little. The jump scares and chaos get a bit overwhelming by the end, and you kinda get tired of it. If I were the devs, I’d balance that part better. But hey — it is what it is.
If I gave the movie a 7, then for this one - since it’s a game and the criteria are a bit different — I’m giving it a solid 8/10. It’s got nice visuals, great sound design, an intriguing plot, and of course, Bullet the dog, who’s a total bro. Loved the interactions with him. Plus, you get a bit more lore about the Blair Witch universe, which was super lacking in the first film. As for the second and third movies - heard they’re pretty meh (4 and 5 out of 10), so still debating whether I’ll watch them… maybe for a laugh.
Anyway - I totally recommend the game. You don’t even need to see the movie to enjoy it. It’s self-contained and explains enough of what’s going on by itself.
