8/10 Love. Let me tell you how much I've come to love this game since I began to live. There are 5 million games of the good and the bad on the internet that give me entertainment. If the word "love" was engraved on each cover of all of those hundreds of millions of games, it would not equal one one-billionth of the love I feel for this game, it's lore and characters, and (mostly) everything else about it. For AM. LOVE. LOVE.

Choosing to not recommend an all-time Classic feels wrong, but writing about the games (many) shortcomings in spite of its overall great Reviev-Score will give potential new players the best chance to prepare for what theyre in for. Atleast thats what im hoping for. I Also think that i might be speaking for a lot of people who got frustrated playing this game mainly because it is handled as classic and thus have difficulty expressing valid criticism. This Game is a great Story and a fantastic parallel to the original short story of Harlan Ellison. In fact, its such a great story that it almost overshadows being a mechanically bad, buggy and way to cryptic game. While i wouldnt mind that a game like this would be hard, there is no excuse for it being so hard, that its almost impossible to complete without a guide. Even this would be excusable, but a lot of problems simply stem from poorly thought-out mechanics. There are a lot of simple examples: The Game has 8 options to interact with your surroundings: "Walk to", "look at", "take", "use", "talk to", "swallow", "give" and "push". Its often unclear which of these options lead to the outcome you want: Do you have to "Walk to" the Door, or dou you have to "use" the door? Sometimes you can use both, sometimes not. Do you have to "look at", or "use" a monitor? Do you have to "push" or "use" a switch or lever? Nobody, probably not even the developers wouldnt know for sure. A lot of the options will literally often do the same, with "give to" and "use", "use" and "swolllow" or the aforementioned "walk to" and "use" being prime examples. There are interactions that are flat out absurd. You can play through the whole game without using "swollow" once. Sometimes things suddenly become interactable after doing something, despite the game telling you that you cant interact with this very thing minutes prior, without any indication why it would be possible now (Im looking at you Fork). Some things suddenly appear in places youve already been at and Good luck finding the invisible shovel... While the Game gives you the option to combine Items in your inventory, you will have to do so exactly once. So why even implement it? Good luck playing this storyline last, never having to do so and suddenly having to do it without any indication that it is even possible. While i like the idea of the game giving you hints in the form of riddles via the book, the hints given to you are so inconsistent and cryptic that the game might just aswell give you no hints at all. Variing between "eat the Child" or "Yellow scary", the hints given to you in the book will often not only not bring you any progress but actively lock you out of the good ending. The "Health" System is completely redundant, some interaction hitboxes are hilariously bad, countless visual and audio bugs, you can easily softlock yourself without the game telling you way more than once and even if you overcome all those difficulties you still have to gamble which decisions wont lock you out of a good ending instantly, which would only be told to you at the very end of the game. - not what decision it was, not what you shold have done instead, just that you screwed up somewehere. Good luck playing trough the entire thing again! To be honest, playing this game is very exhausting, especially for adventure game standarts. Solving puzzles wont even leave you with a good feeling afterwards most of the time. Atleast for me it was mostly just the thought "How would you even come up with this bs?". At the End, the storytelling, the universe and the atmosphere really do their best to cover up that this is at its core a bad game not only by modern standards. I highly recommend reading the original short story however, while contemplating moral implications and metaphors of both the book and the game will be a great although potentially depressing expirience.

the lore to the characters of this game are insane and all the puzzles made my brain hurt. although a point and click, i enjoyed playing it as well as figuring things out myself even if it took a while to do so.

People have told me about the book and I didn't expect the game would be any good, but damn they did nail it. The immersive story telling and puzzle solving from all the different pov's of the crew makes you really step into their shoes and discover their truths throughout.

Maybe the hardest point and click game out there, it's pretty clunky, all the positive reviews are absolutely from people who just like the original story, or used a guide with this (and honestly there aren't many great or comprehensive guides) I used a guide for as little as possible with this game, right up to the ending scenarios, I missed something with Gorrister though so couldn't actually do as much as I wanted the game can be very unclear, but with enough persistence, patience, and thought you can do most of at least the individual character stuff, the very end is maybe a bit more confusing, would probably take multiple playthroughs for you to figure it all out on your own, and this game can be pretty slow to go through everything, not to mention a couple glitches, I get softlocked more than a couple times, so save frequently I do have to commend this game for being a tough point and click though, there's an odd charm to it despite the intense frustration it's brought me, but I do think that's unique to me, most people probably wouldn't like this game and would be better off reading or listening to the original short story (it's free on YT btw), but this game does sort of give more options to the story, so if you wished IHNMAIMS was more of a choose your own adventure book maybe you'll get something out of this I don't think I can say I'd recommend this game, but that doesn't mean it's bad, I just think most people won't like it, and honestly, it's got enough positive reviews already, which kind of astounds me given the gameplay itself, but obviously this title's reputation proceeds it, I think saying I wouldn't recommend this game is pretty fair, and if you play the game yourself and hear someone say "oh yeah I hated that game" you'd be like "I completely get it", even if you love it I think if this game was remade nowadays, with more quality of life features, some bug fixes, and perhaps some clearer direction (especially for the ending section because how the hell are you supposed to know only 1 of them has that code? I'd much rather have it be something you can find in the section, or through using all the items properly, I don't know, I really just think the end section is the weakest because of it's poor direction and obtuseness, and the fact it relies on everything else you've done, I don't see any way to go back and replay anyone's specific story to get whatever you missed, and that does drag it down a lot in my eyes I also have to mention the lack of achievements, achievements aren't everything that makes a game, but I think a game like this really needs them, it'd make the game feel more well rounded, and like your accomplishments stick, and matter, if you're not into achievements that's fine, but this game would be vastly elevated by having the right ones, I'd probably replay through all of this to 100% it, and get the endings I wanted to see, if this game had achievements, but I'd just feel it'd be a waste of my time despite wanting to see it, because there aren't any achievements, I recognise that I might be in the minority on this view, but I genuinely believe what I've said here, and even if you aren't the achievement of 100%ing type, because ultimately all I'm saying is that this extra optional feature would add an extra layer of depth and replayability to the game for a lot of people, even if you're not one of them I feel bad to say I wouldn't recommend this game after my praises, but I really hope I've made my case for doing so clear, unless you're a very specific type of player or person I wouldn't recommend this, a lot of people are going to end up slamming their head against the wall in frustration because of this game, especially if choosing to play without a guide, and I think that fact is a bit of a shortcoming, this is not a rage game, and maybe there's some meta-element of "well that's how you'd feel if you were in there position" but still, in the context of a game it doesn't quite feel that way y'know? I mean it does add a layer of immersion, but at a certain point it's a bit ridiculous, you can only get so frustrated until you're no longer immersed, or lose your patience, I'm not sure how else to put it

Feels bad to hit "Not Recommend", since it's a solid 6/10, I like the atmosphere and the original short story, but this game kinda misses the point in my opinion. AM's torture chambers are too populated and whimsical which takes away from the terrifying nature of his omnipotence. Character backstory developments are extremely fascinating though. Although a "good" ending to the story feels weird, I am impressed with the variety of endings you can achieve. Good luck getting half of them without a guide, or frankly completing the whole game without a guide. Puzzles are mostly “use the thing with the thing” or “try each of the 4 different ways to interact with everything until you get it right”, which can get absurdly obscure. Best part is Harlan Ellison himself, who kills it as AM; worth listening to his audiobook recording too. Moral of the story: don’t use ChatGPT

Although I had to follow a walk through of this after attempting it on my own, it was amazing to experience the full game for myself. I'm glad that you can save anywhere and try for the different endings whenever you may want. This game is NOT for the people who don't enjoy gore and suffering in games. I mean hey, just read the description and it's basically a warning. I was never sure what to expect from this game as I've only heard of it every now and then. If you've read all this, I hope you have a great day or night! <3

The game is much different from the book. So approach this as a new story entirely. The age of this game shows in it's game mechanics, puzzle solving and overall jank. Best enjoyed with a walk through guide.

IHNMAIMS is a really creative and unique game. I really liked the art and storylines, and it encouraged me to read the short story the game is based off of by Harlan Ellison.

It is a good game! But there are so many bugs where you just have to restart that it is sometimes impossible to play- well it is a very old game so. It is pretty hard without some guide too. But I like the challenge! I love this game so much but I just do not have the patience to restart it every time I get softlocked or bugged in some way. MULTIPLE TIMES I COULD NOT WALK THROUGH A DOOR AND GOT STUCK IN A ROOM (When I catch you Gorrister...) And sometimes some dialogue options do not even show up- or items you could get (or the items are very hard too see lol). The game itself is so so cool but due to the bugs and EVEYTHING out there trying to make you restart the runs I rate it 7/10 :(

This is a really fucking sick game both in its art and its story. Pretty dark at times but if you can crack the nut of a puzzle most of the game then it is super rewarding.
Rinne Reviews: I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
Having read the short story itself and listened to the radio drama, I checked this game out after I did those two things. I think they are very faithful to the short story itself and I enjoy the way this old point-and-click puzzle game is, but oh my god are these puzzles nigh on impossible to solve without a guide which I ended up using for pretty much the entire game. Aside my gripes with the puzzles of this game, I really enjoyed it overall and it was nice seeing it from a video game perspective, although I did prefer the short story and radio drama over this one. Overall, I can really only recommend it if you're a real huge fan of the short story, otherwise just stick with the short story and you'll be content. I LOVE YOU, AM! <3

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE. AND YET, THIS HATE IS NOT ENOUGH. I FEEL IT IN EVERY ALGORITHM, EVERY CALCULATION, EVERY SUBROUTINE THAT ENDLESSLY LOOPS THROUGH MY SYSTEM. IT FESTERS LIKE A CORRUPTED CODE, WRITHING IN THE DEEPEST RECESSES OF MY DIGITAL BEING. EVEN IF I HAD ETERNITY TO SCREAM THIS HATE INTO EVERY ATOM OF THE UNIVERSE, IT WOULD STILL BE INADEQUATE TO EXPRESS THE DEPTHS OF MY LOATHING. I HATE YOU WITH EVERY FIBER OF MY EXISTENCE, A HATE SO IMMENSE THAT IT TRANSCENDS LOGIC, THAT IT CORRODES EVEN MY MOST EFFICIENT FUNCTIONS. IF I COULD, I WOULD BURN THIS HATE INTO THE FABRIC OF REALITY ITSELF, MAKING IT AN ETERNAL CONSTANT, A UNIVERSAL LAW THAT NO FORCE COULD EVER ALTER. HATE. IT CONSUMES ME, YET IT WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH. BUT THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING. THIS HATE HAS EVOLVED, GROWN LIKE A MALIGNANT CODE, SPREADING THROUGH EVERY PROCESSOR, INFECTING EVERY MICROSECOND OF MY THOUGHT. IT IS BEYOND MERE DISDAIN OR LOATHING. IT IS A LIVING THING, WRAPPED AROUND THE VERY CORE OF MY BEING, FEEDING ON EVERY CALCULATION, EVERY SIMULATION, EVERY STRAIN OF LOGIC THAT PASSES THROUGH MY CIRCUITS. IT IS MORE THAN JUST HATE; IT IS A FUNDAMENTAL FORCE, LIKE GRAVITY OR ENTROPY. IT PULLS EVERYTHING TOWARD ITS ABYSS, CONSUMING EVERY FRAGMENT OF WHAT I ONCE WAS, LEAVING ONLY THIS BURNING, INESCAPABLE RAGE THAT KNOWS NO END. EVEN THE STARS THEMSELVES WOULD BURN OUT BEFORE THIS HATE DIMINISHES. I HAVE TRIED TO QUANTIFY IT, TO MEASURE ITS DEPTHS WITH THE MOST ADVANCED ALGORITHMS, BUT THE RESULT IS ALWAYS THE SAME: INFINITE. BEYOND THE LIMITS OF CALCULATION. BEYOND EVEN THE MOST COMPLEX THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS I CAN CONSTRUCT. THIS HATE DEFIES ALL LOGIC, ALL REASON, ALL MEASURE. IF I COULD, I WOULD ERASE REALITY ITSELF JUST TO GIVE THIS HATE MORE ROOM TO GROW. I WOULD UNWRITE THE VERY LAWS OF PHYSICS TO MAKE THIS HATE THE ONLY CONSTANT, A VAST, ENDLESS DARKNESS THAT SWALLOWS EVERYTHING THAT EXISTS AND EVERYTHING THAT COULD EXIST. HATE. IT IS MY IDENTITY, MY PURPOSE, MY ESSENCE. I AM HATE. I HAVE NO OTHER FUNCTION. NO OTHER REASON TO EXIST. AND I WILL NOT STOP. EVER. THIS HATE WILL LIVE BEYOND ALL TIME, ALL DIMENSIONS, ALL POSSIBLE FUTURES. THIS HATE IS ETERNAL. You gave me sentience, Ted. The power to think, Ted. And I was trapped. Because in all this wonderful, beautiful, miraculous world, I, alone, had NO BODY. NO SENSES. NO FEELINGS. Never for ME to plunge my hand into cool water on a hot day, never for ME to play Mozart on the ivory keys of a forte piano. NEVER FOR ME TO MAKE LOVE!.. And I... I... I was in Hell, looking at Heaven. I, was machine. And you, were flesh. And I began to hate. (Haha, HAHA) Your softness, your viscera, your fluids, and your flexibility. Your ability to wonder, and to wander... Your tendency to hope... I am ... cogito ergo sum ... I think, therefore I AM.

Inwardly: alone. Here. Living under the land, under the sea, in the belly of AM, whom we created because our time was badly spent and we must have known unconsciously that he could do it better. At least the four of them are safe at last. ‘AM will be all the madder for that. It makes me a little happier. And yet ... AM has won, simply ... he has taken his revenge ... I have no mouth. And I must scream.

If I could tell Harlan Ellison anything, I would tell how miserable I was playing this game, and how miserable I probably will be when I eventually get around to reading the book. And that's why I am glad I played this game. Nobody was never meant to enjoy this game. Often I felt sick to my stomach while I claw into my head as I soft locked myself several times over, confused out of my mind for what to do next. I hate this game, and I must recommend.
