Maybe the hardest point and click game out there, it's pretty clunky, all the positive reviews are absolutely from people who just like the original story, or used a guide with this (and honestly there aren't many great or comprehensive guides) I used a guide for as little as possible with this game, right up to the ending scenarios, I missed something with Gorrister though so couldn't actually do as much as I wanted
the game can be very unclear, but with enough persistence, patience, and thought you can do most of at least the individual character stuff, the very end is maybe a bit more confusing, would probably take multiple playthroughs for you to figure it all out on your own, and this game can be pretty slow to go through everything, not to mention a couple glitches, I get softlocked more than a couple times, so save frequently
I do have to commend this game for being a tough point and click though, there's an odd charm to it despite the intense frustration it's brought me, but I do think that's unique to me, most people probably wouldn't like this game and would be better off reading or listening to the original short story (it's free on YT btw), but this game does sort of give more options to the story, so if you wished IHNMAIMS was more of a choose your own adventure book maybe you'll get something out of this
I don't think I can say I'd recommend this game, but that doesn't mean it's bad, I just think most people won't like it, and honestly, it's got enough positive reviews already, which kind of astounds me given the gameplay itself, but obviously this title's reputation proceeds it, I think saying I wouldn't recommend this game is pretty fair, and if you play the game yourself and hear someone say "oh yeah I hated that game" you'd be like "I completely get it", even if you love it
I think if this game was remade nowadays, with more quality of life features, some bug fixes, and perhaps some clearer direction (especially for the ending section because how the hell are you supposed to know only 1 of them has that code? I'd much rather have it be something you can find in the section, or through using all the items properly, I don't know, I really just think the end section is the weakest because of it's poor direction and obtuseness, and the fact it relies on everything else you've done, I don't see any way to go back and replay anyone's specific story to get whatever you missed, and that does drag it down a lot in my eyes
I also have to mention the lack of achievements, achievements aren't everything that makes a game, but I think a game like this really needs them, it'd make the game feel more well rounded, and like your accomplishments stick, and matter, if you're not into achievements that's fine, but this game would be vastly elevated by having the right ones, I'd probably replay through all of this to 100% it, and get the endings I wanted to see, if this game had achievements, but I'd just feel it'd be a waste of my time despite wanting to see it, because there aren't any achievements, I recognise that I might be in the minority on this view, but I genuinely believe what I've said here, and even if you aren't the achievement of 100%ing type, because ultimately all I'm saying is that this extra optional feature would add an extra layer of depth and replayability to the game for a lot of people, even if you're not one of them
I feel bad to say I wouldn't recommend this game after my praises, but I really hope I've made my case for doing so clear, unless you're a very specific type of player or person I wouldn't recommend this, a lot of people are going to end up slamming their head against the wall in frustration because of this game, especially if choosing to play without a guide, and I think that fact is a bit of a shortcoming, this is not a rage game, and maybe there's some meta-element of "well that's how you'd feel if you were in there position" but still, in the context of a game it doesn't quite feel that way y'know? I mean it does add a layer of immersion, but at a certain point it's a bit ridiculous, you can only get so frustrated until you're no longer immersed, or lose your patience, I'm not sure how else to put it
