SteamWorld Build (SWB) looked similar to the Dungeons series to me, with the overworld and underworld (mine) themes. Upon further playing it, there were other challenges and even other mines that opened up that added a little more depth to the game. In short, the game is fun, initially, but can get a little stale depending what the player is looking for. Twist of Anno 1800 with building upgrades linked to population and a bit of the Dungeon Series. SWB's gameplay is quite straight forward. The player builds above ground to generate population, provide services, and refine materials. Most materials can be obtained above ground (especially during early population stages), however newer populations (Engineers and Aristocrats, later on Scientists) will require other resources found deeper in the mines. Just like Anno, the civilian buildings need access to certain buildings. If no access is given, no happiness is generated. It seems that the production buildings do not need to be near civilian buildings, but as I said, service buildings certainly need to be nearby to provide happiness. Once happiness is achieved in a building then the player can upgrade them to the next class. The mines are also neat and sort of have their own system going on apart from the overworld. Players create regular mining employees at first, but as the ground gets deeper, enemies begin to appear and some defensive strategy is required to keep the operation going. Deeper mine levels did increase the replayability of the game, keeping the gamer busier rather than idle. The game is decently forgiving when it comes to making mistakes. The graphics and visuals are appropriate to the SteamWorld series. There are animations of citizens walking around going about their day and buildings try to display their progress. Conveyor belts are also another visual and functional addition to the game which helps speed up production. Shakes to the screen occur when rock begin to fall in the mines. The whole art scheme and style feel quite right and appropriate to the game, especially the "cutscenes" in-between. The sounds and music were done well. They don't become redundant and a nuisance, and required sounds (such as the train arriving to trade) are important signals to the player. Overall, the game is alright. It's fun to jump in and immediately start seeing progress happen, but the formula can get a little repetitive depending on whose playing. The maps do mix it up a bit and with the train (trade) that comes by (with the option to buy multipliers), it does its part. I bought this game on sale and would certainly recommend to the reader to do the same, unless something like this is what you really want. There were also other mentions of carefully reading their license agreement as some players were complaining the game asks for way too much info. I'll give it a recommendation - but ... as always, do your homework before spending money! this is a game you would play on your phone while riding the bus. Too simple, too ugly, not worth it.

Fairly short game. The first playthrough will take roughly 5 hours on normal difficulty. Very simple city builder and resource management game. The game artificially adds replayability by offering new maps and providing a "landmark" improvement for clearing each map, which can then be used in future playthroughs. Only worth it when it is on sale!

Couldn't manage or priority anything. So if something critical breaks or some enemies breakthrough the defensive line you just have to watch until your little workers get around to it. Defending the Mines was also Lackluster. Defense of the mines is based off building a few defensive towers at nests and building a soldier room, both of which require gold, the most limited resource in the game. And if you don't defend the enemies destroy all your machines and the supports holding the roof up so there are times you have to replace the supports EVERY TIME the enemy attacks until you can afford to trade for more gold to build more defenses, which takes a while because gold is very expensive and there are like 4 nests at the bottom level.

As someone who loves city simulation games but can sometimes feel aimless while playing them, the biggest positive of SteamWorld Build is the fact that it has a story, and goals for you to seek. I found myself interested in completing the game many times over in each different map - sometimes in a very straight forward, goal oriented way, and others by taking my time, making an aesthetic/functional city. The aesthetic is cute, the mine is fun, the mechanics are not frustrating and the learning curve isn't terrible. Great game!

An engaging mix of colony management and the old Rock Raiders. Very well executed, with a beautiful art style.

Just an amazing anno like style game, love it so much, it's about running a mining town in the wild west! Top!

A good enough game. It's a very simple city builder/colony sim more aimed towards younger/casual audiences, which unfortunately means that it is very surface level in the things that it offers. Its building style is very comparable to that of Anno 1800, with different levels of residential buildings that provide different tiers of workers. It has a similar system for keeping them satisfied as well, which is based on proximity and availability of goods. The production buildings themselves also have similar upgrade slots. Not recommended for those who have experience in other city builders, but if you find games like Anno 1800 a bit too complex, this is a good game to play

Underrated game, even without discount worth full price. One small personal complaint from me is just WHY EVERYTHING SO JIGGLY???

I couldn't put it down until I finished it. A very fun game to figure out. I played it when it first came out and haven't looked back in for the DLC, because I know I will not do anything else until I finish it. Absolutely as charming and family friendly as all the SteamWorld games are. Great game for adults and kids. The one downside is that the solution to one map basically works for all of them. Now that is pre DLC so it may be different now, but at launch different maps were mostly asthetically different.
