The qualtiy of this vn is crazy. Not only does the music and art fit perfectly in most scenes, but also the way they use sounds is incredibly impressive. Every action scene didnt feel like a normal vn, it was a movie experience. Soujyuro is such a weird and intresting guy and I love him for it. (Aoko and Alice are also peak). One of the better vn that exist. For me atleast top 10.

Since this was my first read-only Visual Novel with an undoubtedly sophisticated writing style I really can't say too much that hasn't already been said in other positive reviews. However, I still can't refrain from adding something on my own which I'd deem genuinely worth emphasizing. The one thing that has always invited me and above everything else managed to keep me engaged even after taking longer breaks between each reading session was the poetical beauty of both the illustrations - and therefore the very charming artstyle - in tandem with the pertinent alleviating choice of musical background. The story offers both slow/character-forming and exciting/action-packed moments that manage to make its reader create bonds with the characters while also telling a riveting story on top. I personally did like the characters and their personal quirks a lot, especially because the game cared a lot about introducing them properly in the story, which made them all stood out individually. If there was one thing I'd have to criticize it would be that the story usually tends to have either elongated serious or light moments with one being extremely explosive while the other offers a more soothing experience. This contrast can be felt even more, considering the length of individual chapters. All in all I can really recommend this game to anyone who likes reading, especially if one enjoys the stronger and distinct characterization that this media usually offers. The only doubt I can express is that there isn't a continuation of the story as of now. At the end, it felt like, that so much more could have been told, that only speaks for the appealing world the story is set in.

Sojyuro Shizuki send steam review Next time y'all get on Steam please do a better job with the localization. Doesn't affect my enjoyment of the story much, but seriously with as big as TM is they could do a better job.

Beautiful. Never though a visual novel could be so cinematic. The characters and whole story were amazing and I really enjoyed both the slice of life and the action.

4 hours played: yeah, sure that first scene was something, huh 16 hours played: it's very good. I especially enjoy the extra parts that are "skippable". Maybe it's a sick manipulative trick by the writer to make you read more by making it optional, but it's well worth not skipping over. 25 hours played: I still have one extra chapter to read, but it warned me to take a break first. I love 90% of this novel, the other 10% are some unfortunate cliches, but they're in the sillier slice of life places and don't ruin the whole thing. The music is very good. As this is the first Visual Novel I've read, I think I can appreciate what VNs have over books now, though not being sure what the exact position in the chapter I'm in has both upsides and downsides. 30.1 hours played: That's 100%! From seeing other reviews I thought it'd take more like 40 or 50 hours.
I did have to look up a guide to get through the extra story that actually gives you choices. I don't think it'd be possible to guess what the distinctions really are between some choices.
I got exactly 1 hour per money spent! My favorite part has got to be all the bears.

Absolutely a must read. Even the extra chapters unlocked in the archive have been an unforgettable experience.

Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoutsukai no Yoru in Japanese, Mahoyo to its friends) was the longly anticipated new title of Type-Moon's Nasuverse after Fate/stay night's explosive global popularity. It was finally officially released in English a few years ago (there was a lot of drama about the translation back in the day), and reading it was a great travel back to those special feelings Nasu's writing and worldbuilding tend to provoke. The story is technically a prequel for both Tsukihime and Kara no Kyoukai, as it displays the younger days of some of their important characters. Mahoyo also happens in the same fictional city than Tsukihime. That said, I don't think it's strictly necessary to read the visual novels in the timeline's chronological order. One reason for that is that the pace of Mahoyo is pretty slow, full of slice-of-life moments, so if you're new to Type-Moon's VNs, or lengthy VNs in general, it may be a gamble for you, as it can be seen in other reviews from people that couldn't understand the appeal. On the other hand, if you liked other stories from the Nasuverse, you will feel at home. Not only can you find the usual mix of slow paced worldbuilding, appealing characters and over the top battles, but you will also get a VN with high production values (specially for the time). The studio did put their money to good use in creating the story they wanted to tell, even if it may not be for everybody. They were also confident enough in their work to not add any sexual scenes. For those of you that are used to VNs, you probably know what kind of experience will you find here, but for those who are not, there's a demo version of Mahoyo out there, so check it out first to get the feel of it.

It was really nice to read a Type-Moon VN that's made with a big budget and is pretty much a standalone story. There are lots of cool animations and character sprites to convey different moods, and the soundtrack and story were pretty good too. Even though the artist isn't the same one who did Fate and Tsukihime, he did a really good job of imitating that 'Type-Moon style' for the characters. It was an interesting decision to not have choices to make throughout the main VN, but I think it was still an enjoyable read. Lack of choices avoids a problem that a lot of other VNs have where you have to skip through a bunch already read segments again and again to see the True Ending. Overall it's a really solid VN that can be enjoyed both by longtime fans of Type-Moon or as your first entry into the Nasuverse

In the future we will have technology to memory wipe so I can play Type-Moon/Nasu games for the first time over and over, week after week. This is the thought that keeps me going.
