Soma terrifies with its existential horror-forcing you to question what it means to be human while its gripping story and haunting atmosphere make it unforgettable !

This game has been out for 10 years or more. Started playing it, found it slow. Came back to it, kicked myself for not playing it through. The game is a story with tasks. The acting between the characters (the Omni tool and the protagonist) develop hugely. The game mechanics are pretty basic, this isn't a shooter, you have to hide a bit (not as fun as Alien Isolation, but it's not supposed to be). The game has to start slow and the story development is great, you can figure it out as you play with the data logs, but the emotional hits (you'll know when you have them) are worth it. If you're reading this, just pick up the game, invest 9 hours and you're done and will be thankful for it.

“Reality is that which when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away." It is possibly one of the most thought-provoking games I've ever played. The interesting thing is that the horror is more so present in the philosophy of the game rather than the monsters themselves. Very unique experience for sure and one that will stick with me for a while.

The best way to sum up my feelings about this game is this: It's an extraordinary story, trapped within the confines of a horror game. The story is beautiful, the pacing is excellent, and it really left me thinking after it ended. I love it for that alone. HOWEVER... the one exception is the monsters. Yes, they can be somewhat interesting to avoid at times, and yes, lore-wise their presence is necessary. I get that. But there are point where you think "when will this end?" not because of the tension and anxiety of waiting until it's safe to go- no, out of boredom and annoyance. There are a precious few times when the monsters serve well as a way to keep the player tense, but most of the time all it does is slow the player down. The puzzles, by the way, are quite fun to figure out, if not particularly difficult. I would love to replay the game, but when I think about all the time spent waiting for an enemy to inch past, my urge to play disappears. The game is still better off as a game than any other kind of media- the atmosphere it builds just wouldn't work otherwise- but the "gameplay" of sneaking around really hurts it. For someone playing for the first time? I absolutely recommend. The story is just that good, and I doubt watching a playthrough of it would have nearly the impact. Just keep in mind that if any parts feel tedious or annoying, there's still a reason to keep moving forward. Just maybe not a second time.

This game is an experience you can't have in any other medium. I played it a few months ago and it still comes to mind often. I'd even say it's now my favorite sci-fi game AND favorite horror game. It's easy to allow yourself to become immersed in the world, even 10 years later. This is a classic that any sci-fi/horror nerd needs to play.

The WAU is reaching out to every machine, every life form, to manipulate, to control. It's trying to help, save its creators from all this, just like the protocol demands. But really, what is good enough? Where is the line drawn for what is human and what is not? Would walking corpses do? Would a group of machines thinking they're human be acceptable? We can't trust a machine to know, to understand what it means to be. We have to terminate the WAU-project. It can be done.

Amazing game. I was horrified by the atmosphere at the beginning but got used to it gradually. It gets quite philosophical towards the end. It reminds me of the movie 'The Prestige'.

An absolut gem of a game! I can really recommend anyone playing this, that likes horror and story telling games. I got really invested into it and it is as depressing as it is impressive. This game is old yet is better than most newer games. Really makes you think about life, the environment around you and appreciate what you have, while you still have it. Give your family and friends hugs. <3

I flipped a coin for the review score, and I lost. (That's a joke for anyone who finished the game.) There's a lot of great stuff in SOMA, which you can learn about by reading all the glowing reviews. I certainly did! I enjoyed the beginning of SOMA, but the gameplay and story weren't compelling enough to really pull me in through to the end. It took a lot of willpower to push through the final 3-4 hours of the game, and I'd say it was barely worth it. I just wanted to be done. The story is decent but it's stretched over too long of a dull game. There are too many empty and uneventful portions which drag on too long. Multiple 10-20 minute underwater hiking sequences with poor navigation. Lots of backtracking across multiple facilities to get to the next storyline crumb. Many low-value exposition recordings where you need to stand still to listen to them (I started skipping them near the end). Annoying, shrieking, feral "horror-monsters" which we've all seen a million times in other games/movies. I would have enjoyed SOMA more if it had been condensed into a smaller package with less emptiness and with fewer barren "filler" sequences. And the monster parts were all completely unnecessary. I also found the end goal of the game to be very non-motivational. Without spoiling anything, maybe there's some way it could have been written more deceptively to really motivate the player to want to push through. Once the end goal is established in earnest, even the main character's attitude is "Welp, I guess everything is f'ed and there are no better options, might as well go on this wild goose chase!" Everything after that just felt hollow to me, like the whole idea was silly and fake. It's really hard to leave a negative review on something so original. Try it out on sale if you're really interested.

I tried so hard to like this game... The story and the atmosphere were really good, it really makes you feel immersed into a very... "interesting" world you end up in (spoiler free). Even though I wasn't a fan of the voice dubs, especially for a certain main character which I thought was very bland. But... BUT... hell, this game is not fun at all. AT ALL. "Playing" this game feels like a chore. Walking is awful, jumping is awful. Interacting with items is awful. I hated it so much. Don't know what to do? Have fun walking like a snail in enormous under water section trying to understand what to do for half an hour. Honestly, would have been better off as a movie. I'm a fan of walking simulators, but if the main thing about an horror game is RUNNING and HIDING, you better make them good. I dropped this and I will maybe watch it on youtube.

Just as beautiful and deep as Amnesia : The Dark Descent. The story was very unique and the characters were memorable. The soundtracks really fit the setting and the graphics are very detailed & beautiful as well. This should be the standard of a Sci-Fi Horror / Thriller. 10/10

A relatively short but worthwhile experience. The atmosphere was intense and very unnerving at times. The story is very heavy and existential, dealing with what makes us human or not. And the ending... was just absolutely gutwrenching, yet at the same time feels hopeful. And despite being an older game the graphics hold up really well.

Graphic is fine for a 2015 game. Music is very good. Gameplay is fun. Puzzles are reasonably difficult. Characters are great. I love the interaction between Simon and Catherine. Story and the lore is very good. Makes you think who you are as a person. Be careful. This game may trigger existential crisis. You may need to go for a soul searching after finished the game. All in all, worth the value.

Wow, this game makes you question existence, mortality, transhumanism, ethics, horror of continuity. It kept me pretty confused throughout the whole game but it was designed this way, you are feeling what the protagonist is feeling, shock/ confusion/ fear. All of which it organizes itself at the end when you understand everything a lot better.

I want to start off by saying it's not a bad game. I was led to believe it was an intense psychological horror dealing with themes of identity. Those are some of my favorite stories. I was pretty let down... It doesn't push those ideas very far. You don't get those gut wrenching moments. The game even mentions how 'normal' the main twist end up feeling. My favorite part was the beginning: you're piecing together where you are and what might have happened. It very quickly becomes generic sci-fi and looses a lot of that intrigue. The game doesn't really deliver on the themes I was hoping for. Gameplay-wise, there's a lot to like. The interactions feel very immersive, as expected from Frictional. The game struggles to lead the player some times, where it's not obvious what you might need to do to progress and end up looping back around the playable space for anything that can be highlighted or a hidden path. There is a specific section where the player can climb scaffolding, but the climbing mechanics are painful to use, and the solution has nothing to do with climbing. The enemy AI is not very engaging, and is prone to getting stuck (save and reload in that case). It's very cheesable but also often unfair. The experience is unsatisfying. They are important for the horror of the game and the sense of danger but unremarkable. The story being pieced together is somewhat incomplete and very loose. It functions better as a series of pretty good story beats then as lore to study. Stuff happens, stuff happened, but there isn't much to find out on the why. The environmental storytelling is all over the place. Some times you'll see some very deliberate hints that end up pointing at nothing, but most of the time storytelling is going to be through dialog or documents and writing. This game doesn't do anything especially well, it doesn't say anything new It's enjoyable, sure, but go play some better games

After finishing this game. I can safely say it's making my top 3 favorite games of all time. We honestly rarely get a horror game this terrifying and with a fantastic story. If you're like me and somehow have never heard of this game. I recommend it ENTIRELY 1000/10 absolute cinema

Here me out.. I like the beginning of the game where I’m in my apartment; I spent like 40 minutes cleaning up any trash, organizing, putting dishes away, etc. Is there any games similar to literally just that?

One of the best stories I’ve seen in a game. Once you get past the initial horror and jump scarea, the game pulls you in with a story you’ll be so invested in you’ll cry at the end. The devastation is comparable to horror movie classics like the ”A requiem for dream”. Highly recommended

overall just a fantastic game; beautiful settings, great art direction, fun puzzles, and simple enough gameplay for beginners to get into. but none of that is really what makes this game so captivating to me. it's the exploration of topics like transhumanism, identity, faith, and what it means to truly live, not just to be alive. the dialogue between our main characters is what really makes this game for me and what keeps me coming back to it and thinking about it long after i've finished the game. its an incredible experience above all else that really wouldn't be as effective if it wasn't a game. player choice is such an important part in how the game gets under ur skin, and damn does it work. if u enjoy games moreso for the unique experience they can give u, please give this one a shot because u won't regret it.

What a game. All timer for me. Philosophical masterpiece and truly horrifying in a way that isn't tied to scare-factor or monsters. So much to unpack, and I will forever cherish this work of art living rent free in my head. Arguably the best story I've ever seen in a game.

My most memorable experience from Frictional Games. Creepy and claustrophobic, as you would expect. Also, the game makes you think about the nature of identity and what is the true "you". Is the "you" tied to your body or is it just your brain, an amalgamation of cells specifically evolved to process environmental stimuli? Better yet, is the "you" something above your brain, the thing that applies judgment to those stimuli being processed? The game is centered around the theme of: If your body dies, but your consciousness is transferred digitally, do you care if the former "you" dies? After all, a new "you" can be created, just in a different body. However, perhaps identity and consciousness don't just exist or revolve around the brain...

This game was truly impressive. It doesn't have too many jumpscares. But still, that’s totally fine its atmosphere alone is more than enough to keep me feeling uneasy and on edge. The ending managed to tie everything together beautifully, explaining all the events from start to finish in a satisfying way. It left me with quite a few thoughts afterward, and I genuinely hope the developers continue making more titles like this.

After 2 hours i made a new game on easy because, frankly, the enemies are more annoying that anything, you can't look at them and even if you do you can't tell witch way they're looking. After that it was smooth sailing, I got to enjoy the level design and lighting, the puzzle are fun and the story, 10/10 I see the hype and it was amazing

This game was great. Lovecraft - Event Horizon - Sunshine - Alien Isolation is how I would describe this. Throw in some theology of the soul, and awesome underwater play. My only complaint is I wish there was more in the water, and less inside the stations.

I can’t believe I waited all these years to finally play this game — what an experience! From the moment I started, I was hooked. The story, the atmosphere, the gameplay… everything came together so well. It’s one of those rare games that completely pulls you into its world. There were definitely some tough moments along the way, but the difficulty felt fair. It pushed me to think, adapt, and really engage with the mechanics rather than just button-mash my way through. I appreciate games that challenge you without feeling frustrating, and this one nailed that balance perfectly. The attention to detail, the pacing, and the emotional highs and lows — everything about it was crafted with care. I only wish I had played it sooner. Easily a 10/10. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a meaningful and memorable gaming experience.

This is like a love child of Amnesia and Dead Space. I love this. It's such a shame the game is short. It deserves more love and recognition. The puzzles can be a little annoying sometimes but overall, great game
