Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is a well made and impressive game with a thorough thematic design and atmosphere. As a horror game it is rather spartan yet brilliant in that it let’s your brain conjure most of its horrors. Unfortunately it comes with a rather numbing effect that makes later parts of the game feel more formulaic and not as scary. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3494853123

I would not recommend you play this game yourself, but I would certainly recommend watching a playthrough. The idea of the game itself is very interesting, it has a similar vibe to Amnesia: The Dark Descend, so if you liked that, you might like this as well. So why do I not recommend you play this? Bad saving system + frequent crashes - The game automatically saves at few places only. To save manually, you must press "save and exit", there is not just simply "save", so that's a bit annoying. The game often crashes while loading into a next chapter, and then you have to replay a section. This crashing seems to be very common among other players and it happened on both my computers. Impossible to finish - Towards the end, there is a place where the game always crashes, I have tried seven times, but it just won't work. I have to watch the rest on someone's video. Apparently I'm not the only one this happened to. Gameplay isn't that exciting anyway - The gameplay is fine, but nothing too exciting. Most of the time, you kind of just walk forward and press levers and turn wheels as you meet them without knowing why. Sometimes you have to avoid a monster, which means fumbling around in the dark until you run into an exit. The interesting and fun part is finsing and reading notes and figuring out what is going on. So in a combination of all above, I think you are better off watching an edited playthrough than playing yourself. You will get all the good parts of the experience without the frustrating ones. Though perhaps if you liked the playthrough, you can perhaps also support the devs by buying the game when it's on sale.

not as good as TDD but still really good. the story is good, i love the atmosphere and locations. sucks that there isn't an inventory and you can't move as much stuff as in TDD.

Great game, great atmosphere with smooth play. I went through fits to get the graphics and resolution dialed in, but I have after a great deal trial and error found the optimal settings for my system and its pleasurable to play now with more than acceptable results making it worth the effort. Nice spooky mansion to explore with lots of rooms and areas to explore while discovering clues relevant to the experience. Has a great unfolding story line. Very cool adventure and I'm enjoying it thoroughly.

Not the worst game I've ever played, but there's a lot of walking and not anything particularly spooky (unless you're scared of motion blur and camera shake). The story is a decent attempt but doesn't capture what the first amnesia did and seemed to fall flat.

its REALLY short, not as good as the first one, but is worth it if you want something somewhat mindless to play for a few hours. Wish there was more... well *something* to the story. More buildup, more suspense, things like that. The last chapter is when things get really good in the story, but wish it could have carried better for the other chapters.

short and mechanically simple, but it's got good atmosphere and fun to walk around industrial revolution London.

This game was really underappreciated. It's completely reasonable to hate it because it didn't bring back the excellent gameplay from Amnesia: The Dark Descent though, but if you just give this game a chance for it's visuals and story, it can be very enjoyable. It's essentially more of a walking simulator with a few tiny puzzles shoved in here and there. I personally found the game to be very good, just not up to standards with it's predecessor. Either way, I'd give it a 8/10

not as bad as people say, yes compared to The Dark Descent it pales in comparison & is a lot less engaging in terms of gameplay; but the story and setting are still really enjoyable, especially the outdoor areas & the themes of evolution, evangelism & 19th century industry. "walking simulators" are the chinese room's speciality but you could argue SOMA is also a walking sim, just with a far more engaging plot

Good game. This game was shorter compared to the dark descent. I wished they had not removed the sanity system which made the game play really fun in the previous game. Even though the sanity system and the lantern refill system was removed, the game was still scary. The soundtrack in this game was really good as well. The story, even though not as good as the previous game, it was still fun to follow.

While not as terrifying or mechanically complex as The Dark Descent, A Machine for Pigs delivers a hauntingly atmospheric narrative that lingers long after the credits roll. Gone are the sanity mechanics and inventory puzzles; instead, you're treated to a more streamlined, story-driven experience. The industrial setting is oppressive and deeply unsettling, with chilling sound design and philosophical undertones that explore humanity, industry, and madness. If you’re expecting heart-pounding survival horror, you might be disappointed. But if you’re open to a slower, psychological descent into darkness, A Machine for Pigs offers a unique and disturbing journey. 👍 Pros: Rich, disturbing narrative Excellent sound design and atmosphere Thought-provoking themes Gorgeous and grotesque visuals 👎 Cons: No inventory or sanity mechanics Less interactivity than The Dark Descent Some pacing issues

A completely underrated horror game, but also an unpolished gem. It's not a 1:1 sequel, although it probably feels like one at first. The first half of the game is pure horror, without any of the terror of The Dark Descent. The second half offers enemies and a resolution as to why THEY are the enemies. Along the way, you'll read a lot of very confusing letters and notes, and the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place. This game is, so to speak, a logical precursor to SOMA. The latter is the perfection of this gameplay concept with a more captivating theory and story. Feel free to pick up A Machine For Pigs when it's on sale :) Big Minus: Playtime only around 4 hrs.

fucking horrific. it took me about 5 attempts to manage to crawl through the full game. the people who were tasked to make this spin-off of the dark descent had no clue what the original disorienting experience was about. as linear as linear can get, you have almost none of the more creative mechanics of the original game; no lantern oil, no darkness insanity, barely any living danger, nada. just some mere basic, if not conflicting puzzles to slog through. the story was so forgettable and useless that i actually FORGOT i beat the game on my last attempt, and claimed that i hadn't beaten it in a previous version of this review. the sole redeeming quality this game could have is in the jank, and unfortunately it's ironically rid of that too. do not buy.
