TLDR; This is a great game despite some issues: entertaining & tense story, gratifying platforming & puzzles with rewarding exploration, it's solid & satisfying.
Though a sequel to Tomb Raider 2013 (which I strongly recommend!), this game is essentially standalone & a fine place to start. It's almost a mixture of Tomb Raider & Far Cry, but much less annoying.
7.5/10 - I think most people will really like this game!

Gameplay/story:
Issues granted, this is a really awesome game, and I couldn't stop playing. At 44 hours to complete to 100%, this is the largest TR game to this point, though, you could complete the faster.
The main gameplay mechanics (combat, puzzling and platforming) work almost entirely smoothly and well, it's a joy to play most of the time. If the prequel was combat(40%):platforming(40%):puzzling(20%), this felt like combat(40%):platforming(30%):puzzling(30%). To a certain extent you can adjust the ratio depending on how much you like to explore.
On exploration, you have a focus button that highlights collectables and the elements you can interact with. Being an obsessive collector aiming for 100% completion, I used this pretty much constantly. The downside is unfortunately this element was buggy, which I'll get too.
The story is told directly and indirectly, directly with cutscenes: rendered and in-engine. Really engaging and immersive, they do a great job of transitioning from the story scenes to the gameplay.
There's also indirect story you can discover, in the form of letters, notes and recordings found across the maps. They're all fully voice-acted, and the VAs are really good. You might notice a few delivery mistakes here and there, and some information is not worth listening to, but I loved hearing most of these, they generally added a lot to the world building.
Lara sometimes narrates, during gameplay and responding to her environment. She'll express her feelings on the events of the story, usually during the campsite stops where you upgrade your weapons and inventory. It can be funny when something urgent is happening in the story, and you choose to have a nice little sit-down by the fire, as Lara ignores the chaos and talks to herself while you upgrade things; but it's good that you're not punished for taking your time.
I really liked the story, even with a couple of plot-holes and stupid character choices here and there. The notes allow you to figure things out and the game takes a while to catch up, it can be awkward as Lara is listening to the same things you are. I understand you can't have different stories, it would have been nice to at least have alternate dialogue or cutscenes here and there. The notes you find don't spoil anything or make anything worse, though.
With that said, these issues were pretty insignificant, I found the story thrilling; I was never bored in 44 hours and couldn't wait to see what happened next. I loved the historical and mythical intrigue, with some of the sense of dread and urgency over from the 2013 game. The boss fights are improved, and there's much less quicktime events thankfully.
Lara has grown a lot from her last adventure, yet still unsure of herself. She is consistently troubled by how her actions and how they affect, and have affected, the people she cares about. She struggles to carry this burden, but the events of the story are absolutely consequential to her life going forward.
She's still an exceptional person in a lot of ways, when you really think of what Lara is capable of, physically and mentally. The characters you cross are aware of this, which they absolutely should be as it's impossible not to notice while still be taken seriously.
You can reflect for yourself on whether Lara is a good person or not! Personally, I don't think she's entirely good, she's certainly not bad either; she's laser-focused, stubborn, and fascinated. She does what she has to in order to survive and help. Her morality really depends subjectively on how you look at it, and objectively based the events of the story outside her control. I feel if she had acted entirely good, and was not as obsessed as she is, the world might literally have been ended. I do feel she does ultimately makes the right choices where it matters, even if her reasons can be unclear; if Lara wasn't there, flaws and all, everything would have been much worse. Though unquestionably, Lara is an absolute badass.
Lara's model has changed from TR2013, weirdly closer to the pre-rendered model from that game! I think this might be the best Lara model though; great expressions. Camilla Luddington returns as Lara, not just as the voice, but motion capture for her too. The voice and motion capture work are almost entirely well done, there's small moments where the capture looks a little uncanny, and the voice doesn't match the scene too well, but it's rare. The detailed animation otherwise is just about as good as the previous game, so many contextual animations occur as you explore. It's just a pleasure to play.
Negatives!
- You use your focus ability to find key objects and scenery, but it's slow and unresponsive. It even stopped working a couple of times, requiring a checkpoint load. Also when using the focus, Lara sometimes thinks you need help with a local puzzle: "I know, Lara! I'm just exploring, please shut tf up!"
- Some relics you find have extra details you can find by rotating the model around, this function was almost broken; it was either slow or not work at all no matter where you rotate the relic to. It worked perfectly in TR2013! It would be no issue if you didn't get XP for finding these details (used for uncovering map secrets), but four or five of these relics didn't work. Not all relics have these details, but it was annoying!
- There was some t-posing, the funniest was when you have to climb a tower face with a bunch of enemies, some of them standing against the wall or sliding up the surface. This happened I think 3 or 4 times in the 44 hours I played.
- Lara did randomly disengage her hold on some things, usually the axe rope or a climbing wall. It didn't happen very often.
- I didn't like the Vale DLC; a cool story but it's a bit annoying crap in my opinion.
- Wolves are annoying! (There always has to be one annoying animal in every game.)
- Characters do make stupid or odd decisions for the sake of the story, and there's a couple of plot-holes.
- Some of the NPCs aren't animated very well, sometimes a character's face barely moves; usually this is during gameplay rather than cutscenes.
- There is much more to do than the previous game, but the game can feel less focused and streamlined. You might prefer this, however.
- Everything is always on fire during combat! It happens too much, but is quite funny at least.
Extra positives:
+ The costumes are much cooler than the boring ones from TR 2013, some have buffs. There's more too, I think some come from DLC. It's finally fun to unlock them again, which has not been the case since Tomb Raider Legend!
+ The sound design is great, levelled very well. Everything sounds immersive and appropriate.
+ It's often gorgeous, excellent design and so much care. Some areas inspired an audible "WOAH". People really cared about this game.
+ There is much more to do than the previous game, which is mostly fun and I found worth doing for the rewards; there's a high retention rate according to the achievement percentages!
Overall: I had a blast and couldn't put it down. It doesn't quite reach the emotional intensity or dramatic highs of the previous game, but that was a tall order, and the storyline itself I think is actually better, and more interesting, if spread more thinly. It has it's share of bugs, it could have used more polish, mostly with the focus and relics, but the game didn't actually crash a single time for me. I had such a great time, I'd say the third best Tomb Raider behind 2013 and Legend. 7.5/10 - It's great!
