This is one of those games that'll impact you for the rest of your life after playing. It still has some of the best environmental storytelling and lore design in any game out there imo. Bioshock is just simply a masterpiece. This is a game that will forever remain timeless.

When BioShock first surfaced in 2007, it wasn't just another first-person shooter — it was a seismic shift in how narrative and gameplay could intertwine. A bold blend of dystopian storytelling, atmospheric world-building, and moral complexity, BioShock raised the bar for what games could be. Nearly two decades later, its legacy remains intact, even if some of its mechanics show their age. An unforgettable setting. The underwater city of Rapture is the crown jewel of BioShock. Dripping with Art Deco decadence, rusted machinery, and eerie silence, Rapture feels like a living character — beautiful, broken, and full of secrets. Every corner tells a story. Every audio diary, sign, or shattered storefront adds to the slow unraveling of a society that once believed it could escape the constraints of morality, government, and god. A story with real weight. BioShock doesn’t just ask players to shoot their way through enemies; it challenges them to think. Through the philosophy of Andrew Ryan, the tragedy of genetic excess, and the unforgettable mid-game twist (you know the one), it deconstructs the illusion of player agency in clever, meta-textual ways. The “Would you kindly…” moment remains one of the most powerful narrative gut punches in video game history. Gameplay with flexibility. The combination of conventional firearms and plasmid powers allows for creative combat. You can set traps, freeze enemies, ignite oil slicks, or hack security drones to fight for you. It’s not a run-and-gun shooter — it’s a sandbox of cause and effect, and the game often rewards experimentation. Moral choices that matter. The Little Sisters — genetically altered children who harvest a substance called ADAM — present one of the game's central ethical dilemmas: do you save them and gain less ADAM, or harvest them for personal gain? The mechanic is simple, but it adds real tension and feeds into the game’s themes of control, consequence, and free will. Combat can feel clunky. While the variety is impressive, weapon feedback and enemy AI don’t always hold up to modern standards. Hit detection is occasionally wonky, and some enemy types can become repetitive by the game’s latter half. The final act stumbles a bit. After the story’s mid-point crescendo, the last hour or two feels more traditional and less inspired, culminating in a final boss that lacks the nuance of the narrative that precedes it. Visual aging. While the art direction remains top-tier, the original textures and animations (in the non-remastered version) show their age. That said, Rapture’s design still shines through thanks to exceptional style over sheer fidelity. BioShock isn’t just a game — it’s a philosophical experience wrapped in a shooter’s clothing. Its questions about freedom, power, and the illusion of choice linger long after the credits roll. Though some mechanics may feel dated today, the core of BioShock — its ambition, storytelling, and atmosphere — is timeless. If you’ve never explored the depths of Rapture, now’s the time. And if you have, there’s always something new to discover on a return trip. Rating: 8/10

One of the best games I've ever played. Great atmosphere, love the abilities you can get and of course the weapons. Loved the franchise since day one of release on the PS3. Only dislikes, the boss fight could have been better and no New Game Plus in this version.

I've only just started the game, but I'll update this review as I go along. I've been meaning to dive into BioShock for a long time. Since I've heard the game mentioned countless times and I've seen some of the game's art, it felt like a must-play. Well I've finally given it a go, and wow. First impressions: This is a game from 2007 that looks great, sounds great, and has incredible amounts of detail for its time. Not only that, but it seems to hold up incredibly well by today's standards too. Also, the sound design, art style, writing, and world building already have me hooked (what can I say? I'm a sucker for art deco). Clearly, the devs spared no expense in creating one of the best opening sequences in a video game that I've ever seen. I'm usually not a huge fan of these sorts of shooters, but BioShock has managed to pull me in to its universe from the start, a testament to the game's prowess. More to follow...

BioShock is probably my favorite shooter. The story is just really good. The middle is a bit slow, but the ending more than makes up for it. It’s the only game, or really any media, that’s ever made me seriously think about getting a tattoo. As a kid, it just left a mark on me, and I’ve loved it ever since. The mix of powers and weapons felt cool at the time, and the whole setting stuck with me. It’s not perfect, but it’s still special.

Gameplay Mechanics: 8/10 Narrative: 10/10 Graphics: 8/10 Sound and Music: 9/10 Replayability: 7/10 Innovation: 9/10 BioShock is a legendary first-person shooter that’s just as much about philosophy and storytelling as it is about combat. Set in the underwater city of Rapture, it delivers a haunting, thought-provoking journey with one of the most iconic plot twists in gaming history. Gameplay mechanics blend traditional FPS shooting with RPG elements. You wield both guns and plasmids (genetic powers), which allow for creative combat tactics—like freezing enemies or setting traps. The hacking, crafting, and character upgrade systems add depth without bogging things down. Score: 8/10. Narrative is absolutely top-tier. From the unforgettable opening to the jaw-dropping reveal in the middle of the game, BioShock tells a story that sticks with you. It weaves in themes of free will, objectivism, and utopia gone wrong—all without ever losing pacing. Score: 10/10. Graphics still hold up thanks to a unique art deco style and the eerie atmosphere of Rapture. While not cutting-edge today, the artistic direction makes the visuals feel timeless. Score: 8/10. Sound and music are phenomenal. The ambient noises, distant screams, propaganda recordings, and 1950s soundtrack create one of the most immersive audio experiences ever. Score: 9/10. Replayability is decent. While the core story remains the same, trying different plasmid builds or difficulty levels gives some reason to return. Score: 7/10. Innovation was huge when it launched. Few shooters had ever combined such tight gameplay with this level of narrative ambition. It raised the bar for storytelling in games. Score: 9/10. Bottom line: BioShock is more than a shooter—it’s an experience. It combines action, atmosphere, and story in a way that very few games have managed since. If you’ve never descended into Rapture, now’s the time. Would you kindly play it?

Pretty Good if you ask me. It may have "Outdated Reloads" but they're atleast quick while you're in combat. The game can be a little frustrating at some points. But you can get hints. The Idea of Plasmids is a Fun idea while you can have different ammo types. I recommend this game if you want a story rich with Lore.

There's a reason why there is so much love fore the Bioshock franchise, and it seems palpable right off the bat with the first iteration. While some aspects of the game can feel a bit "dated" by today's standards, the atmosphere and general tone of the game, along with the gameplay and mechanics, make for an overall challenging yet fun experience in the city of Rapture. Every corner of every level has something to offer, be it items, ammo, artwork, or a Splicer/Big Daddy ready to greet you.

Genuinely one of the most fantastic experiences I've had in media. Despite its age, it oozes with personality and charm, with such a weird and interesting setting & story to boot. Definitely rough around the edges in places, but overall a great game.

Bioshock is a groundbreaking first-person shooter that combines intense action with a deep, thought-provoking story set in the eerie underwater city of Rapture. The game’s atmosphere is haunting and immersive, enhanced by its unique art deco design and unsettling audio. Players must strategically use plasmids and weapons to survive against a variety of enemies, adding layers of complexity to combat. The narrative explores themes of morality and free will, making choices that impact the outcome deeply engaging. Bioshock remains a timeless classic that redefined storytelling in video games.

Bioshock is, at this stage, a meh. It remains a singular game in terms of art direction, but it doesn't go much further than that. While the combat is better than the slogs of the later entires of the series and takes place in both aesthetically and mechanically interesting environments, there is little variation in enemy type, and there is inadequate complexity in the levels to make exploration really rewarding. The plot is very good for the time, but ultimately very shallow, with a few of the side stories significantly more interesting than the main thrust of the narrative. Overall, the only thing that Bioshock does better than System Shock 2 is art direction, with the predecessor containing significantly deeper gameplay and a better put together storyline, held back only by a generic art style and the limitations of graphics of the day. Still, purely as a visual experience, it's a worthwhile ride, like an afternoon at one of the parts of Disneyland that they redesigned in the 90s. (And, indeed, rapture resembles Disneyland far more than an actual city.)

I loved exploring the underwater city of Rapture fighting crazed splicers and menacing Big Daddies. My favourite part was finding the recordings left by citizens explaining the events leading up to the game as well as going more in depth about the characters and their varying ideologies.
