This game used to be my most recommended MMORPG for friends that enjoy a solid story, crafting, and being able to solo a lot of content until June 2025 when Bethesda decided to stop selling the Gold Road expansion (old $13 sale price for the latest expansion) and upgrade (get the latest and all previous expansions for around $40), and instead starting forcing users to buy their new $80 premium edition. This means anyone who hasn't kept up with expansions or has just started playing the game they probably bought on sale for $5 now has to shell out more money than a single expansion. Also the new season pass is another way they are making users overpay for the game.
A lot of people have always had mixed feelings about this game in the past because you stopped getting dungeons in expansions a long time ago and were forced to subscribe to play any of the DLCs for dungeons and expanded storylines. The new season pass doesn't include any DLC and neither does the premium edition so I guess they want people to not buy their game. Hopefully they see the error of their ways and return to the old pricing otherwise this game isn't worth buying or playing due to the lack of content most $5 Standard Edition sale users will get to experience.

I went into ESO expecting another generic themepark MMO with Elder Scrolls paint slapped over it. What I got instead was... a weird hybrid. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either—it sits somewhere between a casual solo RPG and a half-dead multiplayer game pretending to be alive.
Combat: Floaty. Soft. No weight to it. If you come from WoW or even something like Black Desert or New World, it feels like swinging a foam sword in molasses. Animation cancelling exists, but it’s more of a band-aid than a real fix. There’s a ceiling for skill expression, sure, but getting there feels like you’re fighting the engine more than the mobs.
PvE: Story-driven and voice acted, which is nice the first couple times. But after that, it turns into skip-fest material. Dungeon design is fine, trials (raids) are decent, but there’s no real sense of urgency or progression unless you’re deep into the sweaty endgame crowd. Loot doesn’t feel rewarding. The power creep is real. It’s like they built a house on shifting sand and just kept patching it up instead of rebuilding.
PvP: Cyrodiil is a laggy slideshow most of the time, especially during primetime. Feels like they duct-taped Siege of Orgrimmar AV into a half-broken battlefield with tower defense mechanics. Battlegrounds are tighter, but matchmaking is a mess and there's no real ranked system. If you're a PvP junkie looking for competitive play, look elsewhere. This is mostly chaos for the sake of chaos.
Progression and Monetization: Skill system is neat. I’ll give them that. You can mix and match classes, morph abilities, and build hybrids. But the game is also strangled by its crown store. Paywalls for quality-of-life stuff like the crafting bag, DLC access, storage upgrades—basic MMO staples held hostage behind a subscription or microtransactions. It’s functional if you’re a sub, but scummy if you’re not.
Community and Social Play: The playerbase is casual-heavy. Most people solo quest or play like it’s Skyrim with chat bubbles. Guilds exist, but it’s more for trading and Discord vibes than real group synergy. Don’t expect tight-knit raid comps or consistent premades unless you dig deep.
Graphics and Atmosphere: Beautiful zones. ESO nails the Elder Scrolls aesthetic: forests, ruins, Daedric nightmares, all there. The music’s solid, ambient noise works well, and the art direction’s immersive. That’s where it feels most like an Elder Scrolls game—when you’re alone, wandering, doing nothing important.
Verdict:
ESO isn’t terrible, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re looking for an MMO that scratches the Skyrim itch while letting you dabble in group content, it might hold your attention. But if you want tight combat, competitive PvP, or rewarding progression systems, you’ll get bored fast. It’s a side-MMO at best. Good for chilling, not for grinding.
Rating: 6.5/10
Polished in some ways, padded and hollow in others. Play it if it’s on sale. Sub if you're serious. Otherwise, don’t expect it to carry the same weight as WoW Classic or anything with real stakes.

I've played Albion and EVE trying to get into MMOs but ESO by far surpasses both purely because of the solo potential. You can fight dungeons on your own and there's so much story to explore and so much depth with every city with its cultures and quests.

Subclassing has completely ruined build diversity. Every high end raid is top to bottom the same exact combo of specs, and the first player in the top 500 that isn't using the busted skill lines is rank 410, in which they are in a group with 7 other people running the skill line and carrying them. (they are at the bottom of the meters).
PvP is an unrecognizable mess - and since you have no idea what skills your enemy will have, it's just a pve dps race against different HP bags.
Subclassing has ironically killed any build variety down to a few busted skill lines.

While I happen to enjoy playing the game, I can't recommend it in good faith. It has GROTESQUE monetization. Buy homes. Buy furniture. Buy inventory space. Buy, buy buy buy. And I mean with a credit card, not in game. Honestly, A game you purchase that has a subscription model in it has no business being as loaded with as much exploitative monetization as this game has.
A lot of things can be earned with in game currencies and achievements. But you bet your butt it will take you forever to grind that out. If you aren't easily roped into spending on all that junk, I can safely encourage you try (it is fun). But do NOT touch this game if you lack impulse control. This game will hook you through the nose pretty bad.

Subclassing broke this game beyond anything i have ever seen in any mmo rpg. No need for healers because everyone is invincible. Even the shittiest of dps. Welcome to the everyone gets a trophy ESO. No skill required just your money.

Cancelled my sub after U46. I play mainly healer so this update insane power spike destroyed what little challenge remained for vet dungeons, my role is absolutely irrelevant now, it's like running a normal dungeon. I did a lot of pvp too and that's also gone and it's not going back.

hmm...so microsoft bought ZeniMax eh? now it all makes sense.
no wonder that, as soon as i re-installed and ran it again after taking a break for some months, it silently began running binaries (executable programs) in the background...binaries which i myself wrote in C++ and which i KNOW, can NOT run by themselves or by my system...
binaries which usually are graphical minigames (produce a graphical window as soon as they start) but in this case did create no graphics at all while running (sandboxed maybe...dunno)...
and as soon as i kicked (completely purged) this game from my system, SUDDENLY all this weird self-running-binaries-crap STOPS.
If THATS what microsoft understands by "anti-cheat-measures", digging deep into my system on root-level, running my applications, without my consent...HECK...without even ASKING ME, or at least TELLING ME then i have no choice but to leave this game (which i had so much fun playing for so long) for good and WARN EVERYONE about this SPYWARE now!
!!!AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

If you buy this game be prepared for mostly grinding and leveling until you reach veteran levels. Unless you're willing to drop hundreds on the DLC, or pay for a monthly subscription-- a lot of the content, and gear you will need as a veteran player
will be locked away. This game is constantly changing, updating and also adding new gear so it's really hard to come back and play if you take breaks for extended amount of time. (gear changes, ability changes, and the meta play style changes). It can be really fun when you make friends, and I have enjoyed my time in ESO with the people I've met. I only recommend this game for the social aspect, in a long term game play sense it's a lot to keep up with.

I was really excited to play this game because its been a while since ive played an mmo that I haven’t played before. The world is HUGE and all of the quests have voice acting. There’s tons of quests too and the class progression system is unique and really cool. i was really looking foreward to exploring the vast world and quest and progress my class.
But once I started playing it I realized that everything is so ridiculously easy that there’s really no point in doing anything.. When I get new pieces of gear I don’t even upgrade it because there’s no point. Everything can be killed by just spamming auto attack. There’s no point in respeccing your skills or even learning your class at all because there’s zero challenge whatsoever. Once you get the dungeon finder this is what the game consists of. Que up for an dungeon. Get grouped with 4 random people that you don’t even have to talk to at all because you just wreck through everything. You kill the boss and a bunch of gear drops that you just sell even if its an upgrade because whats the point in upgrading?
The game has the same amount of challenge as hitting a piñata. The piñata doesn’t stand a chance.
And yes. I do understand that there’s “some” challenging things when you hit max level and and get some gear like trials and veteran dungeons. But that’s not why i would play an mmo. I dont know why anyone would think its fun to trainwreck to max level to finally start learning your class. In this regard the content is actually pretty limited considering theres no point at all in going through most of the content. If I want to be max level immediately ill just play a moba. Or an action game. Pvp can also be challenging obviously but feels clunky like most Mmos.
Its really sad too because i feel like there was a good game here at some point
But if you’re 60 years old. You suck at games. Are desperately looking for a way to feel powerful, And you throw a hissyfit everytime something hurts you or you die. Then this is the game for you
Oh and yea I didn’t even talk about the disgusting monetization but there’s no need because plenty of others have.

Went to create a character, booted from server. Re-logged, booted from server. Pass on this trash!
Edit: Can't refund because the 3rd party launcher does the actual downloading. This means that you will be over the 2 hour time limit for the game 'running'. Supreme trash.

I liked it and enjoyed it years ago and wanted to enjoy it again but...it has a subscription model now and way more microtransactions in a clear greedy manner.
Like I'm sure it's optional to some degree but it feels like they made some changes to make you feel like its necessary, like for inventory. I remembered that my inventory got filled super quickly and had to constantly dump stuff with no reasonable way to add more, so adding extra inventory is one way to get someone to pay for it. Same with locking content behind the subscription after already paying for DLCs. Just... nah. Those microtransactions being there now compared to the smaller selection years ago just kills any enjoyment I had for this game so.
If you have lots of free money to spend on base + DLC + sub + micros... sure, go ahead, have fun. But for someone who doesn't have such money, that just wants the base game, DLCs when wanted, plus a small optional selection in the coin shop? Not anymore, it seems. Best to cut your losses and play something else worthy of your wallet.

I have played for 4 years...
It's the second week in a row that maintenance leads to not being able to login normally. Login in takes long, often during that time connection is lost. The maintenance, in general, takes way too long and is timed horribly if you live in Europe (in general I lose a day of playing) Any maintenance is followed by issues for (groups of) players.
Support is virtually non-existent. Reports are barely read (it is never enough to write one report, there is always a whole lot of back and forth). Replies are standard and will always tell you the issue is most likely on your end - even if it isn't. (turn off all your addons being the all-time favourite).
You pay for a month - but get 28 days - which means that for this game, there are 13 "months" to a year and you will pay accordingly.
Events can be fun, but as some players always find a way to exploit an event, they are often nerfed, making it a lot less fun for non-exploiting players.
In the long run, playing solo is made to be less rewarding - the developers make sure you are obliged to play with guild-mates or groups, thus obliterating the whole "play as you want" sales-pitch. I do not mind grouping up from time to time, I do mind when whole events are set up that way.
Last but not least, it is clear this game is (about generating income) for the developers, not about players. The proof of that being: without ESO+ one is severely limited and certain items can only be bought with crowns - which can only be obtained by spending money.

I played this game for pvp years ago and had a lot of fun. The strategy behind the builds, the combat, and the different forms of pvp scratched a pvp itch that not many, if any, other games could do. I saw the subclassing and decided to download the game and try out some builds, thinking a whole new world of buildcraft may come of this. But I jump into a BG and lose hope immediately. The state of BGs is way worse than I've ever seen it. Im happy to see more people playing it but I won't be logging back on until they fix the pvp modes.

You can't literally enjoy this game if you don't subscribe to ESO plus. ESO plus gives you unlimited inventory spaces, without it, your bag gets full every 30mins. ESO plus is not a requirement but the game WILL FORCE YOU to get it if you want to enjoy this game. ESO plus is $13/month. Enjoy.
I also don't get the point of playing this game when the whole world of ESO is very easy and boring. This is an MMORPG, right? There is no sense of danger anywhere in the world map. Yeah endgame is difficult, but getting there is also very difficult because the early game is extremely boring and unfulfilling.

I play almost all games solo and this is a great MMO to get into as a solo or even a beginner MMO player. The main storyline is pretty long. They also give recommendations on what skills to level making it a relatively fool-proof process. That being said, they still have plenty of end game content for veteran players so I don't see myself putting this game down anytime soon.
Buying/ selling items and equipment is a pretty confusing process and you honestly need to get a free add-on to really understand how the market works. Definitely a downside for me but doesn't make the game unplayable.
Another thing that annoys me is that the game has hundreds of crafting materials and you can only have so many items in your inventory or your bank at a time. ZeniMax made a solution for this by implementing a materials bag with unlimited slots to hold all your items. However, it's $15 / month... I found that I can just buy the ESO Plus membership once every few months to dump all my crafting materials in the materials bag and then unsubscribing to save my money. Not a deal breaker for me but a bit greedy from ZeniMax IMO.
As of writing this I have ~100 hrs into the game and have only had 1 bad experience with another player. Honestly, the community is great and if you can find a guild you like it makes the game more enjoyable.
Anyway, I hope you all get a chance to play this lovely game :)

Yeah, ESO is my game now. I have always loved MMOs. I have also loved Elder Scrolls. I somehow only became aware of the game a couple of years ago. Started playing it and haven't stopped. ESO+ is worth every bit. With the content you get (pretty much everything but the VERY latest release) and the craft bag... My main playing is done PvE. Not a big PvPer so there's no real reason for me to give an opinion on it. Love how easy it was to find a social guild. Love my fellow players, save the spammers and the scammers.

Weird case - an mmo which plays terrible in a group. The game lacks any group-friendly questing mechanics and doesn't provide difficulty scaling for anything above single player. There's literally no reason to use more than 2 out of 10 buttons you can bind your skills to and your group has to be at the exact same plot point in order to progress together. DLCs are overpriced and deliver 1/4th of a content any other MMO does. Free to play option basically blocks off crafting due to lack of materials bag so even with 9 mule characters you'll find it too annoying to deal with. Quests get boring and repetitive fairly quickly even tho the main plot is rather promissing. Despite still operating on a subsciption model it feels like it's in an extended "maintenance mode" and doesn't get much zenimax attention anymore. Try for free and avoid paying anything because it doesn't make the core game any better. If you don't enjoy it for free you won't enjoy it more by becoming a member.

It is a good game with a lot of variety, overtime they have started monetizing more and more content. It is not pay to win but it is pay to grind less.
Expect to sink hundreds of hours into this game to experience endgame content. Both PVE and PVP are dominated by meta builds which take a long time to learn, develop, and master.
A big appeal to ESO over other MMO's is its unique PVP experience. Cyrodiil is a massive battleground with hundreds of players from three factions, all fighting eachother for control of keeps. These keeps are attacked using siege weapons which is a really fun experience. The Imperial City is basically the Dark zone from The Division. It is a PVP/PVE area where you farm currency and loot, but players can kill you and take half the currency you have on you at time of death.
Unfortunately, as stated earlier, the PVP zone is 90% Meta builds with thousands of "champion points" which make them incredibly strong against non-meta builds and people with less champion points. Champion points are extra levels after level 50, to get thousands of them you will need to spend at least a few hundred hours grinding. You honestly can't compete with people who have been playing for years unless you are unemployed and live in the game.
Overall, a good experience for casual players. If you are wanting to get into PVP or endgame PVE, expect to suffer.

I played this game for bout yr and 1/2, doing solo mostly except for normal dung. / arenas and occasionally trials. If you are beginner and want to Veteran Dungeons be prepared to be belittled and trolled. and if you join a group and they are chatting in different language add them to ignore. I changed my setting to their language so i could communicate. really F,ed myself. Contacted support and was no help at all just went in circles with communication, so took it as a sign to just move on after two weeks. Now i see, they did me a favor. spent well over 2 grand. I have no problem with supporting artist but hurts that tech support gets any of that. b/c they sux BIG TIME.
Moving forward I will put my cash towards VR.

Hello everyone, please do not download this game.
When you download it, it shows 120GB, and after opening the launcher, it asks to download another 120GB because the game hasn’t fully downloaded.
I tried several times to merge the files, but it didn’t work and it won’t accept them.
I’m really frustrated with this company because they still haven’t fixed the issue.
Also, it’s just a waste of your time. Better to go and play Fortnite until this gets fixed, because it’s not worth spending all this time waiting for them to fix this problem.

I've been playing this game for... almost five years now.
And it's actually great if you
1) have money to spend on a subscription;
2) have friends or eager to join a guild;
3) don't really care about the lore.
If anything on the list isn't about you, you will probably get bored. Or mad. Or worse.
First of all, if you are here to become the greatest hero of the world and conquer every dungeon and trial, you have to buy them all or the subscription. Even if you already have the game. Being a hero demands sacrifices from your wallet.
If you are here just for the lore or the story (as was I), every chapter definitely will be an unforgettable experience. Mainquest of the base game is pretty interesting, Morrowind and Summerset stories are really great. But rest of the world is just a mess and I really mean it. You will experience the same plot from region to region...

Boring combat, mind numbing,
no skill expression or challenge,
0 build diversity everyone is running the same set up, sub classing has been added and instead of adding any variety it killed it even more,
pvp is an absolute joke,
questing is disconnected treats you like a moron during dialogue, writing is stale, voice acted yes, but same old go talk, fetch or kill quests,
assets and enemies models reused left and right,
community awfully toxic for such a casual game,
ticket support is handled by AI,
devs clearly have absolutely no idea what to do with this game anymore
Just go play Skyrim or Oblivion until TES6 or just any other mmo.

I just came back after they released the massive subclassing changes and I am having a complete blast. This is the best MMORPG on the market by far. Also, unlike wow that makes all prior content useless with each expansion - this games content is completely useful and viable after each expansion. Unlimited amount of engaging content both PVE and PVP wise. And the housing system is by far the best of any game ever made. They literally give you developer level tools.

Why is the gaming community so hard to please. look at literally every mmorpg and you see the same complaints every single time, "just fetch quests" "combat is boring" "too grindy" "isnt WoW" then just dont play. Quit crying about a game you continuously dump hundreds or thousands of hours into STILL. like why cry and give it negative reviews when you still play it religiously, then later on when theres no new players because of your baby review bombs, yall will cry about that, yet it is the fate of most mmorpgs, where they are left with the annoying and always complaining veteran players no one wants to play with. You see the same complaints in LOTRO(Great MMORPG) SWTOR(Great MMORPG) Star Trek Online(Ok just because I dont care about star trek but even still, fun) like literally the fans of this genre do nothing but complain about every game in the genre, unless they are glazing WoW. One of the most overrated and in my opinion, boring of the many of the genre. Its elder scrolls, if you have been a fan of any of the elder scrolls games and ever wanted to experience them online with friends, or even yet, as a massive multiplayer, then there you go, youll have a blast. the sub is optional, and i love how people who dont have it just dog on people who do because we work and choose to spend chump change on a sub for a game we play instead of waiting on parents permission or just because they dont have a job. The game is good, most of the community is awesome(save for the few types of players I mentioned earlier who are just miserable but wont stop playing). It is just like any other genre, yes theres tons of grind, its not actual work....calm down. Yes, theres microtransactions no one is forcing you to pay for, but like most things in life that adults want, they cost money. you cant get peoples hard earned work for free just because you want it. Every single MMO has them, subs and micro transactions. no different. Combat is ultimately better than most besides a couple who intentionally made their combat in their game stand out(while ruining the rest.) these people claim its boring, but if you've played WoW, LOTRO, SWTOR, STO, Hell even current ones like new world, the combat here is much more engaging. Graphics are great compared to the same games mentioned. the areas are pretty big. some maybe not as big as ff14 but who gives af. its not ff14. and thats a good thing. They are detailed and steeped in elder scrolls lore and stories and highly detailed to fit. If you like mmos and you like elder scrolls, then, again, here you go. its exactly what it promises to deliver. some people are just impossible to please no matter how good the game is, they will find the dumbest stuff to complain about, whilest still doing whatever it is they dislike so much, for another thousand hours. Doesnt make sense, unless....the game is good...

Absolutely insulting new monetization model. Pay full expansion prices for less than 1/5th the content. This new 2025 season is genuinely enough to make me consider leaving the game entirely. I have been playing since Beta and have been loyal for a decade and ZOS could not care less. Do not get into this game, I regret my part in getting others into this game.

Storage and inventory management is horrible as you are forced to subscribe to get the material storage bag otherwise your inventory is full after about 4 hours of play. Pure money grab on the part of Bethesda not to mention the ridiculous prices of the store for housing, armor and weapon skins and mounts. The game itself has aged well but as they lose players they milk the remaining players to continue making money.

This shi is so overwhelming and hard to understand how to minmax the shit out of your build... But you suppose to do it if interested in endgame party content.
And they added scribing, sub classes to make it even worse.
But i still love this game bruh.

i hate the fact everything is pay to win kinda thing.. gaming isnt what it use to be.. if you have the money, GREAT.. if you dont .. well, just dont get the game.. another thing, why can't we get companions in the base game? Or atleast get more than one if we buy them? That sucks... NOW put that aside... its the most addicting mmo ive played.. sooo much you can do and if your ready to pay then its great i guess.. also, everything is incredibly expensive in store... I mean INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE.. get ready to pay £20 for a freaking mount... which im not ready to do so...not sure if to recommend or not, the game is great but the money you have to spend is idiotic... im in the middle with this one..

After playing ESO for years on and off I got my wife to play and sign up for ESO plus. I cannot gift my wife a mount she really wants because support will not make my account eligible. This is after having already purchased the crowns and support told me I'm shit out of luck. Don't play there are other MMOs with more friendly customer service.

I have to pay for the game, pay you a subscription, pay for inventory space, pay for bank space, pay for expansions, pay for QoL items all of that on top of the usual cash shop with loot crates and FOMO... hats off, you literally made me ArenaNet and Dovetail look like the fairest companies on earth

I need to give this game another shot, but from what I did play, I was underwhelmed.
It didn't keep me interested like other RPG's do, nor did I find it as fun as other Elder Scroll titles.
Overall, I didn't really need to play this game, it felt like nothing to me, but maybe if I give it another shot my opinions will change.
As of right now though, I don't think you need to play this game.

first 4 hours of my play time and I've already countered 4 game breaking bugs where I have to restart the game to get it back to work again. Classic Bethesda behaviour I guess
