Cons:
- There's a save game bug (at least in co-op). You have to join games in a specific way, as in press 'continue' and then 'join game hosted by [name]'. Getting invited by the host via Steam seems to cause the game to constantly start a new save file. Resulting in multiple save files, and your collectibles and abilities resetting. When we finished the game (having found all collectibles), two of us were still missing half of the collectibles. Though I went back and re-found them anyway, it's still very annoying.
- Sometimes, the game can get a little buggy or laggy (at least in co-op), though nothing gamebreaking. Buggy when it comes to a few physics interactions, where (as an example) we tied 2 mage boxes together with a rope and wrapped it around a branch, but then the boxes spazzed out and phased through the branch. Laggy because there were some moments of 'rubber-banding' and stuttering, especially when it came to faster platforming and physics.
- There are one or two levels that felt much less enjoyable to play, and even annoying to get through at times. Not many at all, but still. My example for this is level 12, the Crackling Mire.
- The final boss feels too intense and demanding for a game like Trine. It was a big tonal whiplash for us when that fight began, and overall it just wasn't very fun for us.
- The ending sequence was a little bit short in my opinion. It was pretty and wholesome to be sure, and by no means bad or boring at all... But it did create a bit of an 'oh, that's it?' feeling for me.
Pros:
+ The environments of Trine 4 are very beautiful. Moonlit Forest and Gossamer Grove are just a few examples. The levels truly feel like being in a wondrous fantasy world, and just walking through them and taking in the sights and sounds is an experience in and of itself.
+ Trine 4 goes back to its roots, with the classic Trine 2.5D experience, with puzzles, platforming and whimsy. Some of the combat might be a little bit lacking at times, but overall it's a very enjoyable game.
+ There are plenty of levels to play, more than Trine 1 and 2 even. 18 levels from the main campaign, 6 levels from the DLC, and 1 additional free level. So there's enough content here in my opinion.
+ An overall chill, interesting and wholesome experience! Even though there are a few areas that interrupt this by suddenly being a little too complicated or intense, overall its gameplay is very good.
+ It's a fun co-op experience, if you've got some people to play it with. Playing solo is still fun though, but definitely less so in comparison to co-op.
+ I was able to create a lot of amazing memories in this game with someone very dear to me.
TL;DR - For me, the positives far outweighed the negatives, so overall I would definitely give Trine 4 a positive review and my recommendation.
