I'm going to be extremely honest. This game is quite fun. It has a good gameplay loop that feels entertaining and not too repetitive. Each job has different expectations and play styles. As Captain you are expected to be the leader/boss while also maintaining command and driving the ship. Your word is law. Say on the different side of things like the assistant, you are expected to be expendable/disposable. Course you get better with over time and eventually get some pretty good level ups that help make you so much more important. I will admit that I have yet to play engineer/mechanic and functionally I'm not too sure what their differences are. I know that technically they are different and somewhat play different, I just haven't gotten the chance to see that yet. Jobs like Security Officer and Medic are so important when playing. The medic is the one who is supposed to be the best at healing and IS while the Security Officer is the weapons man. All jobs have perks to showcase who they are and how different they are to the rest of the team. When you are missing one of those jobs it can feel like the crew are lacking in that aspect.
Another thing to note is the many different enemies/wildlife you can encounter. Each one mostly feels different. Even those that I wont speak about here to avoid spoilers. Also being able to explore parts of the map and find things scattered about is really quite nice. If you spend time following the ocean floor or roof and taking some time to look around in caves can be really worth it.
For some things I'm not the biggest fan of, I'll admit it is mainly the lacking medical. Don't get me wrong, it is still extremely fun to play the medic/doctor, but I feel that just using morphine to solve everything somewhat gets repetitive and feels rather boring. Sure there are other meds you can use but morphine is the most reliable and easy to get ahold of. If that new DLC is anything to go by we might be eventually getting a revamped/updated medical system that I'm very excited to try out.
A quick explanation of the gameplay loop:
Start at outpost, gather supplies, get missions, undock from outpost.
Depart from outpost, travel through the ocean, battle enemies, do any missions you have out in these dark murky depths, travel some more, make it to the next outpost and dock.
Then you are at the next outpost. (Could be a good outpost or a bad outpost. Depends on how you've played the game up to getting there, or how the environment on the map said the outpost was.)
Now then the lore of this game is amazing. It is quite fun but a little confusing. I will admit the ending of the game is pretty neat, a little confusing, but really fun. (Trying to avoid spoilers).
The crafting system is also pretty good and you can make honestly a lot of really good stuff when you reach the level to make it.
Going alongside the crafting system is the perk system. All jobs get a different perk tree that they get to go through and decide on what they want. I will admit the perk tree's size and the length of the game usually means you will likely reach the end before finishing it especially if you have Jovian Radiation on.
Jovian Radiation. This is quite a mixed topic. The people I played the game with it hated it, but personally I quite enjoyed it. I do wish it was a tad bit slower and did some more interesting things in the level instead of just killing outposts that have been in it for awhile and killing everything swimming about the water while also slowly killing you and your crew. What would be cooler is if the enemies got stronger while in it/perhaps mutated or were a different type than the normal enemies that dropped perhaps less or better loot. It'd make it more fun for the people who aren't driving the ship around as they don't get to do much while the radiation is ongoing as just sitting in the ship while doing nothing as you slowly die to radiation and don't have anything else to do is rather boring. Either way I think to improve this all that would need to be done is to either slow the radiation, or change the areas that are being affected by it so that more interesting things are happening for the crew onboard the ship other than the captain/the few seconds the gunners actually get to shoot something before it dies to the radiation.
The one thing that I enjoy about this game the most is playing it with friends. Playing it single player is still pretty fun, but playing it with friends is a whole new experience. Having a proximity chat that is really good while also having a crew all trying to sing sea shanties is a amazing experience.
All in all a really fun game that I say is 89/100. Nearly perfect but just needs a few things that we likely might be getting in future updates/dlc.
