Great game to play in terms of strategy. I would not recommend buying all of the DLCs and I must warn that the game optimization can be unforgivable. Other than that, great fun game to play (and mod).

This game will ensure any distraction you have causes your plans to collapse, every mistake is exploited fully. You will have no idea what the best choices are, you wont know what the information on your screen means. You will shift+cliick instead of right click and lose a war. And nothing will go to plan. If you think you know whats going on and what you are doing, then you are probably unaware of how 80% of the game works. You should watch at least 100 hours of youtube tutorials to have a better idea of what you have no idea bout. You will always be a noob at this game, 10,000 hours may get you to low-intermetiate ability if an update or DLC doesnt change everything. And yet, it is a actually a lot of fun and very addictive, I recommend this game fully. Never before has it been so fun to be a complete idiot and feel stupid. Only wish the tutorial was updated so it would progress further than just how to make a frontline and assign an airwing to bomb part of Africa

Would love to say that I love this game, but Ive given up for now. If your strategy based war game makes it too hard to even understand how to attack you failed. I watched just as many hours watching youtube video as I have playing this game and I STILL DONT KNOW HOW TO ATTACK. potential to be a great game but if you put in this much time to make a game this intricate take the extra time to give us hints as to why shit isnt working for us. Im pissed and for one reason only. This game has POTENTIAL. Dont even give it a chance if you dont have hundreds of hours of time each couple weeks.

Hearts of Iron IV is easily the best game I’ve ever bought. The strategy, the alternate history, the chaos it’s all insanely fun. I’ve lost track of how many hours I’ve sunk into it, and I’m still not bored. If you like thinking five moves ahead and rewriting WWII, this game’s a gem.

The game is waiting for an hour, then epic battle which you lose in 5 min and then you restart... (Coming from 200+ hours) Edit: I guess you can learn how to play if you spend like 2000 hours on it, but if you won't then you might have a hard time.

Accidentally Started World War 3 Over a Sandwich – 10/10 Would Betray Allies Again I downloaded Hearts of Iron IV thinking it was just Risk with better graphics. Three hours later, I was knee-deep in supply lines, crying because Bulgaria refused to join my faction while my convoys were being torpedoed by Canada (yes, Canada). Tried playing as Germany. Blitzkrieg went well until I forgot to garrison France and 13 angry Belgians took Paris with a bicycle and a dream. Switched to the USA thinking it would be easy mode. Accidentally turned fascist, invaded Mexico, and somehow ended up puppeting Luxembourg. Don’t ask. I have no idea how that happened. Also, the AI? Let me tell you about Italy. I love them. They’re like that friend who shows up late to every war, declares on Yugoslavia, gets wrecked, and then asks you to bail them out—while you’re busy fighting literally the entire Soviet Union with 12 divisions and a bottle of vodka. Modding is great too. One minute I'm playing historical Germany, next minute I'm ruling the world as anime Hitler with cat ears and a Luftwaffe powered by dreams and questionable decisions. Multiplayer is pure psychological warfare. My friend promised a “non-aggression pact,” then nuked my capital and laughed like a Bond villain. We haven’t spoken since, but I respect the hustle. In summary: HOI4 teaches you history, strategy, and how to cope with betrayal, starvation, and Poland doing better than expected. Final Score: 10/10 – I invaded Switzerland just to feel something.

Played as the UK. Forgot to guard Gibraltar, lost the Med, spent the rest of the war drinking gin and complaining about the weather. Empire in decline simulator, best game ever.

the game is an unbelievable waste of time. doesnt come anywhere close to being anything worthwhile for singleplayer. done with paradox game sin general. ultimately shallow gameplay where the AI is given insurmountable cheats. a lot of time playing their games. develop your life in another manner. please.

- join my first game as german reich - successfully invade the netherlands somehow - try to invade poland but gets invaded by the UK instead - switches to USSR - realise i have a war goal on iran that i didnt know about - invade iran successfully - adopts communism as the ideal way to live apart from all of that, very good game rate 10/10

The game is fun, you need to get creative and turn on your 1 braincell to figure out how to win, and with a bunch of mods the game can be really fun. My only complain about the game are the dlc's, they fall into three groups the first is that its expansive, its not fun or expansive and not fun.

It only takes roughly 500 hours to understand 45% of how all the systems work and interact with one another. Other than that it's a great game, high recommend for player who enjoy grand strategy games and the possibilities of alternate history.

I believe i sincerely suck at this game: it almost feels like getting rammed by the whole allies even in non-historical is a tad too complicated for a lad like me. Haven't played a lot (yet), but I've always watched many playthroughs and lemme tell you, they are quite different compared to all the actual logistics you have to deal with. Still, very fun, just, next time, lower the prices from the DLCs. Cya in another review section my fellows

Not recommended for people who do not have the time for long exasperating games. There is a difference between strategy and complication. HOI IV needs a written manual larger than Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill" just to explain all of the stuff in it. If you go to YouTube for advice on a walk through, that's not a good way to go either since most of the streamers will gloss over stuff they don't use and ram too much info about the stuff they DO use. The most sane streamer gave me a lot of info I needed and a lot of stuff I didn't. After a while all of this micro-management nonsense gets tedious, not fun. I enjoy complexity to a point and this game might prove useful someday, but with all of the plug-and-play games that allow you a relaxing game night experience why would you go though this frustration? Go along and play through the non war years and everything is great - slow, but great. Then war time hits and your play screen is littered with windows you can't remove, enemies that decimate your troops even on easy mode with no money to replace them or a strategy guide to explain why it happened, and troops that do not move like the walk-throughs state. Not to mention hot keys are all set up in a fashion that is not efficient. I might stick with this game to break it's stupidity, but that's the stubborn side of me. If you are looking for a good war game go for Medieval Total War. You want a good WWII game? Go for Kards or Cold Waters. Ignore this insanity.

when I first purchased this game it worked amazingly well and was a lot of fun. Then they patched it with a bunch of purchasable DLC that I never wanted and to this day have never used and I had to start over. Fine. I play one scenario through to to completion then they patched it again with more new content that has nothing to do with the core game. I had to uninstall/reinstall the game because it would do nothing but crash. Now I cannot even play through the game without it crashing and uninstall/reinstall. when I bought this game two years ago I would have recommended this game. Now I own this game and I cannot get my value out of it because they keep adding new content that keeps bugging the game making it impossible to play.

I heard this game was supposed teach you things about the military. I learned yesterday that a large part of the military is a "navy" (armed ships that engage enemy ships in water). THIS GAME DOES NOT EVEN HAVE A NAVY FEATURE!!! In addition to this, Hearts of Iron 4 has trapped me in my mothers basement for all of my years of playing. I am eternally trapped in a state of unemployment, I lost all my friends, I have no rizz, no assets; my only purpose is to watch Bitt3rsteel, and "build civs, build mills, make army, use army, and start a new game because all of my tanks ran out of f**king fuel, my air force is out of range (i'm to lazy to fix it) and all my infantry has attrition only imaginable by god himself in the middle of the Soviet Onion." My advice to anyone thinking of getting this game: pick up your phone, scroll on a social media of your choice, for however long to develop ADHD (the only cure to a HOI4 addiction) and save yourself. All the other positive reviews were made at gunpoint via paradox. Please don't end up like me. Let this be the last comment you read before you close your device, go get yourself a job, start a family, and live a long and healthy life; before it's too late...

this game is very casual, and primitive. it has only 2 kinda good things: focus system and miltary. in other aspects it either just bad(for example economy) or they are missing at all(diplomacy). the only things that could make you stay here are mods(they can be fun) and pure military autism, when you look how your divisions surrounded your enemy's divisions, and you happy because of this. its not historically accurate, its not deep, its not simulative, but it is buggy, messy, and overall not that good. 4/10

Even in 2025 this game is a lot of fun. Being able to change world history and seeing how things could've unfolded is perfect for a history nerd like myself. The games tutorial is a bit lack luster, its a pretty shallow tutorial that can leave you very confused, I ended up watching like 20hrs of youtube videos to fill in the gaps. Outside of the high learning curve, its an amazing game

This game is incredibly addicting, would recommend for fans of grand strategy games or other paradox games. On the other hand a single run can easily take multiple hours even at the quickest timescales, this may not be surprising to those familiar with this type of game but is still important to note, and as such this game becomes a massive time sink in a way you may not even notice. If you have the free time to sink go for it but if not stay well clear of this game.
