Nier Automata is an amazing game about androids and machines. It's rather complex such that the game allows you to play 3 different characters at different point of times across 3 different routes. There are also more than 20 endings that you can achieve which adds to that. The gameplay is really fluid and fun, there is so much shooting and hack and slash. The characters have such a strong personality and the story makes you think about life a lot. The soundtrack is literally melody from heaven and its a blessing to hear it. There is so much to customise that everyone's experience and preference will be slightly different. I am glad to play this game once in my life and this game definitely has a place in my heart.

Nier: Automata is another beautiful game. The details and the graphics are amazing, and the story is unbelievably good. The atmosphere is unique and the music is emotional. Combat is smooth and fun. In the end, I recommend it with all my heart :) 10/10.

Nier: Automata is a crazy, beautiful, and highly entertaining journey full of nutty ideas and awesome gameplay. It may not include the most sensical story or compelling characters, but its frenzied combat -- coupled with beautiful visuals and a stunning soundtrack – make it too much fun to pass up. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3498267839 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3506706732
Gameplay Mechanics – How the game plays moment-to-moment (movement, controls, unique systems).
-This game has way too many mechanics for me to individually go through. So I will try to bundle them up -NiER Automata has a lot of different sections with different mechanics each. Sometimes it will be an Space Invaders flying section bullet hell, sometimes it is a side scroller, or top down. Sometimes it straight up a shoot em up arcade mini game, but most times it is a 3D ARPG with camera controls in which you can attack with a variety of weapons and Pods. -I absolutely love the variety of scenarios this game provides the player. Makes every encounter and area very unique and memorable, as well as each character. -The game also has a very unique way of setting up skills, passives and even HUD elements. It took me a bit to find out what was going on, but it becomes very intuitive with time. -You can even FISH. -One thing I want to note is to always remember to save your game, this game DOES NOT auto save with side-quests and stuff
Difficulty & Challenge – How hard the game is, balance of challenge, fairness.
-The game has three difficulties, regardless of them, the game can be really easy or really hard depending on how you decide to play it. I played a lot on the regular difficulty, then I tested the easy difficulty and did not see too much of a difference, so I never switched back. I tried the hardest one too, but I was already max level and way too op for it to matter.
Combat System – How fights feel, variety of moves, enemy behavior.
-This game has a lot of quirky mechanics, and the funniest one are the "Auto-Chips". When you equip them, you character does actions automatically, meaning that if you equip all of them, the game play the fights by itself. This was so much help for farming some stuff like levels, as you can afk while it does the job. This also works for the arcade sections, and makes Hacking way less annoying. -The game is mostly very fluid in the movements, attacks, jumps, skills and shooting. Feels great to play with some very satisfying feedback. The dodging is pretty nice as well. -All playable characters have unique combat, and sometimes even movement, mechanics. I enjoyed all play styles. -There are not a lot of enemy variety, but I don't think that bothered me at all. They all feel very appropriate for the world and story. Plus the fights are always very fast paced since they tend to release A LOT of energy balls, making the melee combat filled with that bullet hell feel. -The chips add a lot of build variety, and you also have a pod that accompanies you, you can shoot with it, as well as use a wide pool of skills. - Overall a lot of variety and awesome feeling combat.
Weapons, Gear & Abilities – Variety, upgrade systems, usefulness, uniqueness.
-In this game there are Melee weapons, Pods and Pod programs. you can also hack enemies and even self detonate to give out a lot of damage. You can change clothes, but it is strictly visual. -you can have three preset of chips, so you can quickly change sets to fit best each fight you are in (very underrated feature imo). -Weapons and pods can be upgraded, but some materials are quite rare. I ended up getting most in the shop on NG++.
Level/Area/Mob Design – How environments are structured, exploration, layout creativity.
-The map of the game is not big, but somehow they managed to do a lot with it. I never really got tired of it, aside from the Abandoned Factory. I absolutely hate going through that area. -The map evolves a lot with the story and it is very easy too traverse, the movement makes it great and fun to run around and there are fast travels near all important landmarks. All areas have some unique enemies, and they are placed really well, it is never annoying to just run through as it is easy to avoid enemies.
Story & Narrative – Plot, characters, pacing, emotional impact.
-I won't talk about the story itself because this one is truly amazing and you need to experience it blind. The game has 26 endings, but only the endings A,B,C,D and E really matter. The other ones just happen when something specific happens during playthroughs. This game's story is very philosophical and quite depressing for most part. But it did make me laugh, made me warm inside and made me cry a few times. You will come to love every single character, even the mobs and the enemies, by the last end of the game. -The cutscenes are gorgeous and the dialogues are very engaging and well voice acted.
Music & Sound Design - How good is the music and design and how well it fits the game.
-Music and SD is really good. all sounds fit the world super well. i can't really remember any motifs from the game in terms of music, but I did enjoy it as it was happening.
Visuals & Art Style – Graphics quality, artistic direction, animations.
-The game is not very colorful, but I think it fits the apocalyptic setting. The aesthetic of the game is super cool. I love the character designs, as well as areas, enemies and weapons. It is very stylized, just like the Japanese fantasy games usually are. -Performance & Polish – Bugs, frame rate, loading times, overall smoothness. -The game runs very smooth. Even on steam deck I was getting 60 fps. Never witnessed a single bug or crash.
Replayability – Side content, multiple endings, NG+ options.
-This game has a lot of replay ability. Just by going for the 100% you go through the story twice and a half and it is never boring or repetitive. Also the amount of builds and challenges one can do is huge. And you can go for the 26 endings if you feel like it, some are pretty funny.
Boss Fights – Design, difficulty, creativity, memorability.
-As I said, the game can be harder or easier if you want too. I had a hard time early game, and then I over-leveled and literally one shot a few bosses late game. The bosses are very creative and fun to fight. The encounters are multi phased and utilize most mechanics of the game. -There are a few very memorable bosses, overall pretty nice quality.
Achievements – Creativity, difficulty, how they encourage exploration or mastery.
-The achievement list has some duds that are quite grindy. However the game has a very weird mechanic: an in game shop in which you can buy achievements for the game. when I finished them game I was missing a few, and I loved the game so much that I was afraid of ruining my memory of the game by spending an additional few hours grinding stuff like materials to upgrade all weapons or pods, or finding 100 bodies and catching 80% of fish. So I ended up spending all in game currency I had left on the last few achievements.
Conclusion -Very underrated games with one of the best stories and tone ever. I would give it a 9/10. Please play this game. if you don't enjoy the gameplay that much, just turn on auto chips and let yourself experience the story.
people say you need do sidequests to understand the story but running around a hamster maze for 20 minutes to get 2-3 lines of vague dialogue from 2b or 9s doesn't enhance the experience. also funny how they animate 2bs cheeks jiggling but cant animate their mouths on the few times they do speak in third person. seems like that booty got people feeling philosophical or something.

A true masterpiece. Nier: Automata delivers an unforgettable experience through its hauntingly beautiful story, breathtaking music, and striking visuals. Don’t let the character designs fool you — beneath the surface lies a narrative rich in emotion, philosophy, and meaning. I can't recommend it enough.

The gameplay is okay, not too outstanding and attractive, a kind of hack&slash but not enough. If you play for the story and characters then you have found the right game, enjoy the way it describes humanity. The music of this game is great, great graphic. And you will understand why these characters have so many fans.

NieR:Automata, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix, is a masterful fusion of high-octane action, thought-provoking narrative, and hauntingly beautiful world design. Set in a desolate, post-apocalyptic Earth where humanity’s remnants wage war via androids against alien-built machines, the game follows the journey of combat units 2B, 9S, and later A2, each offering distinct perspectives on a conflict that is far more complex than it initially appears. What begins as a stylish action-RPG quickly evolves into a multi-layered experience that challenges the player’s assumptions about war, identity, and existence itself. The gameplay is a slick blend of PlatinumGames’ signature fast-paced combat and RPG progression systems. Dodging, combo-chaining, and switching weapon sets feels fluid and responsive, with each character bringing their own combat mechanics. 2B delivers clean, elegant strikes; 9S emphasizes hacking and scanning; and A2 offers raw, berserker-like power. Interwoven throughout the combat are bullet-hell segments, platforming challenges, and side-scrolling sequences, keeping gameplay varied and surprising. Yet what makes NieR:Automata stand out is not just its mechanics, but how they’re interlaced with its storytelling—frequently shifting genres and perspectives to reflect narrative shifts. The game’s world, though open and expansive, is purposefully melancholic and sparse, creating a haunting atmosphere that reinforces its themes of loneliness, decay, and forgotten purpose. The soundtrack, composed by Keiichi Okabe, is nothing short of phenomenal—delicate, eerie, and emotionally charged, it complements the game’s tone and elevates even the most ordinary moments into something profound. Voice acting, both in English and Japanese, is strong across the board, giving depth to characters that are, on paper, emotionless machines—yet are more human than most human protagonists in other games. A standout feature of NieR:Automata is its unconventional structure. With multiple endings—each building upon the last—the game gradually unravels its true narrative through repeated playthroughs that never feel repetitive. Instead, they reframe earlier events, introduce new characters, and present ethical dilemmas that challenge both the characters and the player. Few games reward perseverance as richly as this one, with each ending adding weight and meaning to what came before. In sum, NieR:Automata is a rare blend of style, substance, and emotional depth. It’s an action game that doesn’t just want to entertain—it wants to make you think, feel, and reflect. With its tight combat, deeply philosophical story, and unforgettable soundtrack, it leaves a lasting impression long after the credits roll. It’s not just a standout in the action-RPG genre—it’s one of the most memorable games of the past decade. Rating: 8/10

HOLY SH!T THIS GAME IS AMAZING!!! I am going to sound like a loser but i have played a lot of story games but none was as GOOD AND DEEP like this. Don't want to spoil that much but the game is trying to send you a message that even machines can have emotions I feel sorry for the people who calls this game a "gooners game" and miss this masterpiece game.....

Finished the "first time" more than a year ago and knowing that I had to play it at least one more time to "finish it" gave me a headache... then I decided to push through, becose moma didn't raise no quitter, and... I loved it. A game worth the effort. This game has it's limits gameplay wise, but it's diverse enough that you'll actually won't feel too much the repetition. The story is the actual focal point of the experience. Honestly a really, really good plot. The characters as well are nicelly written. I fully advise to anyone the narrative trip that is Nier:Automata. 9/10

I sunk 70 hours in 3 weeks into this game and came away with the conclusion that it is one of my favorite games of all time. However, do I think everyone should play this game? No, trying to 100% the game is a slog, there is a lot of backtracking at times, and the graphics haven't aged well. But looking back on it, I think every second was worth at the [E]nd. Give it a try!

NieR: Automata very quickly became one of my favourite games of all time. It's an absolutely gorgeous game that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. The soundtrack is incredible, the animation and graphics are fantastic (especially for a game that's almost 10 years old), the characters are unique, and even just the structure of it is unlike anything I've played before. There are some parts that can be tedious or frustrating but that's mostly grindy stuff that isn't required to complete the main story. The narrative of Automata absolutely captured me, and it's one of the few games I've 100% completed because of it. Overall this is an incredible game that I would definitely recommend giving a chance!!

The game direction is just amazing. the action is awesome. i loved all the different types of gameplay mechanics. the combat is fine. it is just not at the level of souls like combat. the music is great. the game looks great. most of the side quests are not super interesting. personally, i never really connected to the characters, and story was just okay for me. overall i would recommend this game if you want to play something wit cool action sequences and with very unique and quirky game direction. i have definitely never played a game as unique as this before

I was introduced to this game technically through my dad. I found out about this game because my dad had a bunch of figures of the NieR:Automata characters in his room on his shelf where he has his other figures and things. Unfortunately I don't have an A2 figure, but I do now have a 2B figure in my room. Anyways that's unrelated to my review, after playing replicant to play this game I realized why I dropped this game before (I played this game a while ago, but dropped it due to its introduction) and that is because of how hard the introduction is. Now playing on a controller this time around helped a lot because this game is pretty much unplayable with a keyboard, it was still extremely difficult on hard difficulty so I had to resort to the normal difficulty, I will do another playthrough on hard, though. Introductions aside, this game has a very expansive combat system with me finding out a combat move I could do 50 hours into the game which is saying something because I had to set time aside to figure out how many moves I could do and also look them up as well, even after all that I still missed one move after coming back to this game to do some important quests. Now with all of that aside, I want to get into the good stuff, the story. This game has some of the most heart-wrenching stories, not even from the main story but from some of the quests and optional pieces of content that have it's own crazy depressive and backstory lore to them only seen through optional things or from the anime (which I really recommend, I love the anime and especially when A2 is in it and how they revealed A2's given name which I really loved) but as for the main story of course it's one of the best out there. 2B and 9S's relationship in this story can be perceived as romantic, I also perceive it that way, but mostly, as for the message in the NieR franchise goes, it shows the humanity and emotions in these lifeforms in which "emotions are prohibited." It's difficult not to spoil it when I want to get into detail, but to see 2B and 9S's banter in the game, the parts in which they talk to their operators in which it also reveals a side in them such as themes of family or being curious about what's on Earth, the themes in family being more prevalent in the story of A2 and the machine lifeforms as well is something that was very entertaining and made the emotional depth of the story as great as it is. For A2, which is by far my most favorite character in the game also happens to be another story full of grief and despair, A2 also having a similar personality to that of 2B in which she is cold and harbors a great hatred for the machine lifeforms, I feel the same way and way more stronger in fact that I do A2 like I felt about Kainé in replicant, something about characters like those have me attracted to them in someway where I pay more attention to their stories and the things they had to deal with to get to the point that they are in the game. This game is by far one of the most beautiful and best game I've played in my life with characters that are absolutely irreplaceable to me, stories that I sympathize with and I cry to, to rate this a "10/10" would be an insult to this game, it goes beyond rating for me, I hope people see what I did when playing this game, I will never forget.

NieR: Automata will always have a special place in my heart. The combat is insanely smooth and stylish, but what truly broke me was the emotional depth of the story. Watching the world through 2B, 9S, and A2’s eyes left me speechless — it’s not just a game, it’s an experience that lingers long after the credits roll. One of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking journeys I’ve ever played.10/10❤️❤️❤️

(+) is pro, (-) is con, (~) is variable.
Gameplay (510)
+ It's a JRPG in action combat format. + Combo and weapon variation is solid enough and there's lots of tricks to mastery. - Controls are jank, takes some adjusting. (get the mod if you use keyboard/mouse) - Camera wants to be just annoying enough from time to time. - Get used to running around the same places a lot. - A lot of the completionist content is checklist filling. Very tedious, very unrewarding. - A lot of empty map space, though you could argue this fits the world. - Material/upgrade systems be grindy, though a lot of it is optional and you can beat the game without it. - Loot is rather unrewarding most of the time, usually manifesting in mostly passive upgrades, 1/X of ? material for an upgrade and lore items with very little to them. (to note, some lore items are good, but a lot are meh and not a good reward for quests) - A lot of weapons are functionally similar and their differences mainly show when fully upgraded, with usually passive functions that hardly affect how you actually play. ~ Combat is PlatinumGames style. Easy to play, high ceiling, but ultimately serviceable. Hit or miss depending on preference.
Visuals (8/10)
+ Cool scenes + Hot babes + Combat is stylish - Visual clusterF- when all the FX is running. - Get used to fighting against the camera. (get mods if you use kbm) ~ Low fidelity, so sometimes it feels like a 2014 game. (not that important)
Audio (9/10)
+ Amazing soundtrack + Solid sound design ~ Voice acting, at least the English dub, is decent, but it's awkward from trying to emulate the original language's intonations. Think decent anime dubs from 2007. Still solid, but it's not winning awards for it.
Writing/Story (9/10)
+ Probably the main reason people like this, aside from 2B's ass. + Side quests tend to be written well, makes side characters easy to recall, even unique at times, despite not having much in the way of voice lines or character moments. - One of the side quests is designed to be so asinine I doubt I'll ever complete it. ~ A lot of the lore details are references to other media, so if you know what they are, it's compelling, if you don't, it feels like you're trying to piece together stuff that you won't have any context for unless you experience their original source or look it up. ========== Final Verdict (9-ish/10) I'm glad I played this, though I sort of see why some people consider it overrated. It's got a certain amount of gameplay jank that's quite iconic to PlatinumGames. If you weren't expecting it, having to deal with it feels like a constant uphill and even if you do, it can still be annoying. The story it tells is not particularly grand, but the way it's told is interesting and the game is making a serious effort to tell its story, rather than give you a message, which I consider the best way to deliver a message. A solid experience. --- note: Played on Normal Difficulty.

The combat's pretty fun, I guess? The story... well, it's trying to be deep, I think? But honestly, I just kept losing track of what was happening between the tears and the existential dread. 2B is strong and all, but it’s like... everyone in this game is either sad, dying, making unfunny jokes or just not okay The music’s is the best part, and I swear, it sticks with you even after you turn it off. Anyway, Just started playing. Salt

I got to be honest, after playtrough A I did not fully grasp what was going on and kinda felt like the game was overated and did nothing special. It was just ok I guess, I didnt really look forward to do it all again for playtrough B. But in the end after watching the last main ending I now can understand why the game is this way, what it is trying to do and why its so highly praised. Its was my first platinum game so I was not familiar with its unique way of story telling and world building, I never experienced this before in a game. Its probably also the reason why a lot of players bounced off early or did not care about anything in the game, including me. So now after finishing the game, understanding the lore, the characters, its world building and the message its going for, I can say that this game really is, a piece of art. It is one of the most unique and memorable games that I played. I only wish I knew how this game was structured from the start, so that I would be patient and let myself be sucked into the world. Now I feel like i played like 50% of the game without ever thinking about anything, just to see the last ending. So please if you ever gonna play this game do yourself a favor, try to get immersed from the start, listen and take your time to explore it will be 100% worth it in the end if you reach the final ending. You can only experience this game once. If you love games as a medium. This is a must play

For all its flaws and almost empty rpg mechanics, still a bold, ambitious, stylish, fun, existential hack and slash action game with a main story worth playing through. Side quests are either fun and good for world building or tedious. Presentation is wholly unique and memorable along with an uncompromising sense of humour mostly for the better and only in rare cases worse (one section had me very annoyed). A game worth experiencing. Glory to mankind.

I know this is an old game but you have to be out of your mind if you expect me to play through that whole intro again. I don't care about your stupid themes about cycles of death or whatever. Just give me a checkpoint before the boss that you haven't prepared me for. Every strat I've seen has just been to cheese it by mashing evade for infinite i-frames. You have made a bad videogame. And it sucks because the rest of the combat and the story seem very cool, but you have used 2 hours of my life to make me angry and reward me with nothing. EDIT: I beat the prologue boss on my third attempt and the game promptly crashed my computer. ( It's beefy, this is the only game on steam that has managed to do that. ) So now, thanks to this ridiculous no-save feature, I still have to replay everything despite completing the level. Braindead devs. EDIT 2: Okay this game is really good but I'm still mad

Holy I just finished this game and let me say, this was amazing. This game is one of, if not my all time favourites. The cast of characters are each incredibly well written and I got emotionally invested in each and every single one of them. I especially felt a connection towards 9S. The world is beautifully designed and watching how the world would change with the story and the characters was amazing. Each piece in the soundtrack fit in well with the scenario. please play this game TL:DR Nice game, I love A2 and 9S

This is the best game I have ever EXPERIENCED. It made me feel things. Absolute masterpiece. I don't even know where to start. The combat, the music, the cinematography, the game design, just A++. This game transcends genres, by meshing every type of game you've ever played in a really enjoyable gameplay loop. I can't believe it took me so long to play this game. I thought after...finishing the game, I might play it again a second time. Well...it's even more awesome and unique the second time! If you know, you know. [*Endgame Hacking is absolutely brutal. I'm not too proud to say that I changed the mode to Easy, and put in the Auto-Chips for the very last major hacking hurdles in the Hacker Recovery Tower. It was the only time I wasn't having fun.]

I don't think I've ever recommended a game harder the this. Everything just comes together so well, the music the atmosphere. This is one of the few games that I consider to be worth every penny, even off sale.

Each treasure had a different shape And one of them had a shape of a human Only Yoko Taro could put final boss before the ending credits, after, and inside simultaneously Combining multiple genres, from slashers to simple text novels. Making UI as part of the game. Rearranging background music to foreground. This game didn't fear to experiment in everything, and successfuly so And on top of that - it's pinnacle of music, story and storytelling 11 out of 10

existentialists are gonna go to town on this one fam! great game , music was something else too , but that can be said only for the artistic aspect of the game , cant say the same for gameplay ! it was fun for the first 20 hours, held up nicely i guess, but dear GOD! did it feel like a slog to continue after that (could be my mistake for binging the game from start to finish, i should have taken breaks). Glory to Mankind! / 10

This is a game that makes me want to play multiple times. Decent graphics even in 2025, nice music, nice 2B and A2(Yeah bois everyone likes them), and plenty of mods. The biggest con for me is probably you have to install mod to make the PC version show the PS controller icons correctly. Oh and the price bro its a little expensive.

One of the best games I have ever played... the story, game play, music, visuals, and voice acting are just top tier... SPOILERS AHEAD: I wish that the true sequel would be made where it is the continuity of the true ending where all three androids are alive... and true co op... meaning if you play online, and you choose Nines, the other two players can only choose either A2 or 2B...

NieR: Automata is undoubtedly amazing and if I had to give it a numeric rating it would be an easy 10/10. Never have I ever played a game where I found myself this emotionally invested in the story and the characters involved. Furthermore the soundtrack, character and world design, and hack-and-slash combat just add another layer of fun to it. So give it a try for yourself and enjoy the ride!

Pros: Mind-blowing storyline, really play with feelings, non-stop tingling on my skin since i play this. gameplay are good enough especially on console. most side quest are beautful and relevant to storyline if rating just by experience it woulld be 10/10 Cons: repeating gameplay, not so much change for every choice.
