I've played and beat this game in one full sitting [strike](okay, a few bathroom breaks and snackies too)[/strike], completing all the sidequests avaliable. So I've decided to make a detailed review which can hopefully maybe answer some questions as to if this game is worth purchasing and all. Note that this is coming from someone who overall likes the world of TRON, my only experience with it are the movies (TRON and TRON: Legacy). This review is mainly spoiler free.
TRON: Catalyst
is a top-down action-adventure game where you control a program called Exo. During a delivery job as a courier, her last delivery mysteriously explodes, and she awakens as a captive of the government in control of the grid, Core, with the strange ability called the Glitch, granting her the power to loop through time with each derezz (TRON's version of death) or forceful restart she suffers from. With little to go on, she must escape their clutches and find out what exactly is happening to her, making her way through various regions of the Grid.
If there is one thing I can say about TRON, it's world-building has always been interesting and loads of fun to learn about, and Catalyst is no exception to that I would say.
There are alot of concepts and groups to digest, but the game has a codex to allow you to go back and learn each term, so you don't get too lost. Alongside that, the locales in the game are all finely crafted and fun to look at, thanks to the neon-lit artstyle of the game and world. Each new area feels distinct from each other as you progress through the game, and there's a lot of good mythos and history in this world that adds intrigue to it (the Users, Flynn the Creator, Tron the Hero etc). The devs of this game show alot of care into the world and makes me think they themselves are fans. While I'm talking about the world and story, I'll also state that
the voice acting in this game is excellent.
It really helps to get immersed into each character and really helps add to each character with a voice. Conn, the main antagonist, is by far the stand-out here (what can I say about the same guy who voiced Breach from Valorant, and Malos from Xenoblade 2).
But while the world itself feels interesting, I can't really say much of the same about the story itself. It's not... bad, but nothing really stuck with me throughout the entire game.
I'll start with the centerpiece of the story: the Glitch power, and the ability to loop. In gameplay, this means that every time you die, you restart at the beginning of the level, but with the knowledge that you acquired before you died. You can also forcefully reset each loop as well by holding down a button. Catalyst's story REALLY makes use of this looping thing narrative wise, having moments in the first half that rely on Exo dying and getting looped. The whole second half of the game relies on this loop as well, as the second half of the game consists of going back through each level and changing/locking history to the needed outcome.
But in gameplay, the loop mechanic is so underwhelming...
For a game that wants to show off the idea of, "fixing the past," and "changing history," this storyline feels way to railroaded and linear. Looping in the game practically doesn't add new options to progress the story, and all it does is just heal you and take you back to the beginning, a glorified restart button. All the loops in the story are MANDATORY, and looping on your own volition has no bearing on the story. It's already a bummer, but when the game straight up FORCES you to go another path to reach the same place/objective despite the fact that a previous loop gave you information or a way to get to your objective, it gets particularly frustrating... In no way am I asked for branching paths or massively different storylines, but when the game brings attention to the whole looping thing in the story and then makes looping in game effectively worthless, it's kinda hard to ignore... (I mean, throughout the first half, I literally only chose to loop once, and that was only after the game locked me out of the main objective due to having enemies hunt me down). Aside from looping, I never found any of the characters very interesting or intriguing. Exo as a protagonist is... okay. She's not annoying or an asshole, but I never really found myself cheering her on or heck, wanting her killed. For one, Exo lacks a real backstory or hints as to the person she was before all of this. It's hard to really feel connected to her when I don't really have a starting point as to why she is the way she is, especially when this is a story where she must push aside her own selfishness and use her powers to help and save her friends. Alongside this, it doesn't feel like she has this "realization," moment, or a "moment of change," deal, making her arc and change feel sudden. I'll also say that the antagonists never felt properly built up. It was definitely jarring for me to see that the antagonist was Conn, which I'm on board with, but it never really felt like he earned that position either until the end.
Overall, the story is... mid. It's okay, I'd say. But it fails to really stir any emotions out of me, and all I can really think is that the Glitch overall was misused in both story and gameplay, and that it's protagonist and antagonist really needed time to fit into their roles better and be properly built-up in terms of their arc.

While this is a story based game, there are other stuff I enjoyed, and other stuff I didn't enjoy so much...
Combat itself is actually pretty solid and fun. You have a three hit attack combo, a heavy attack done by holding the button, and of course, you can throw your Identity Disk (your main weapon) at enemies. There's also a parry, and later in the game you get the ability to alter your weapon's code by executing enemies, changing it's properties for a limited amount of time. Alongside this, you can upgrade your disk throw, your parry, and your execute, enhancing them in various ways. When you're fighting against hordes of foes all at once, this game can be intense and fun, and it's fun to learn and master to a degree. The main issue however is that it gets somewhat repetitive too fast. The enemy variety for much of the game consists of the same three enemies, with harder enemies showing up in the near the latter half of the game. Not only that, but you max out your skill tree WAY TOO FAST! I explored each stage and by the time I got to the 5th level, I had already maxed out my tree... yet there was still half a game left! Combat only wears on at this point, andd while I never got to the point of hating combat, I started to see myself enjoy it less and less. Also, the Parry Damage upgrade is hilariously broken, enabling you to one shot enemies just for parrying them, even one-shotting some bosses... Add onto the Parry timing upgrade and it makes Parry into an EZ one-shot ability that trivializes the game. Last thing I'll say... the soundtrack is pretty good. I didn't really notice it at the first half, but the second half was when they really started to go harder on it, and I can't deny, I do kinda wish I could buy the soundtrack if I could. A mix of techno/EDM music that's fitting for the TRON world, and overall I had a blast listening to it.
Overall, my thoughts...
I really wanted to enjoy TRON: Catalyst. I like TRON's world, and there's plenty of that world to enjoy, and so I can say that the people who would get the most out of this are TRON fans. But as a game, and for someone who might not be as interested into the series, this game is a hard sell... For a mainly story-focused game, the story doesn't do it for me, and as fun as combat is, the $25 asking price feels steep. In my opinion, I would get it if it goes on sale, but at the current price, I don't feel like I can recommended. Get at your own discretion.

The Good: + Love the vibe, the writing and the characters. It's exciting to be back in the Arq Grid after the events of Tron: Identity, and continuing the story started there. + Combat feels juicy and impactful + World is lovely if a bit empty feeling. + I enjoyed being able to use light vehicles. + Good voice acting by the main caste. + I love seeing all the settings created in the Legacy movie and elements invented for Identity (such as the data trees). The Bad: + Man that combat tutorial was hell, kept resetting me without telling me what caused the reset. TOok tons of loops before I realized it was failing me for using the disc too fast. It needs allot more communication as to WHY it fails you. Also resetting the tutorial from scratch is rough when you don't know what caused the reset. + Maps are big, but it feels like a missed oppertunity to not have more points of interest outside the main path. Collectables, cosmetics, lots of oppertunity to fill the locations of the grid with more than just run to the quest marker and kill everything. This dosen't ruin the game, just feels like a missed opertunity to flesh out the locations and invite exploration. + Light Vehicle's feel shallow, the cycle gets you from point A to B but the constant respawning enemies and tight environments gives you little room to utilize the light walls. It feels like a tacked on mini-game more than an ability or core mechanic. + Unlocking upgrades comes pretty late into the game. Initally you get a few to invest in, but I'm 4 hours in and just got my 1st expanded tech-tree to invest in. + Parry is overpowered, why fight or steal code when 1 parry can kill 2 enemies at once much faster. + Using your identity disc as a weapon is just not fun. If you hit, you do a tiny bit of damage. If you don’t catch it. Game over. Seems like the risk vs reward for that entire mechanic is flawed. I just melee and parry and enemies melt at standard difficulty. Why give us a ranged attack if it forces us to stand still and catch it or else die entirely? Better to always have it return and allow us to upgrade its damage, bounce, etc. Identity disc’s are a hallmark of the iron universe, and popularized as a weapon in the movies. It feels like it’s been regulated to a melee weapon only now.
Overwhelming Meh
Tron: Evolution is way better
Stuff that make it passable as a game
Mostly bug-free (I only encountered 2 minor bugs, both resolved by restarting from checkpoint)
Meh
Coming from someone who appreciates Tron aesthetics and world-buildings, the environment and map felt so bare bone and repetitive, in addition to that, this is already a very short game, but 1/3 of the plot is based on reusing old maps, and I'm not talking about "looping", I meant literally a huge chunk of the game asks you to revisit old places The concept of "looping" is exciting at first glance, but I lost interest pretty quickly, it felt extremely repetitive, and the dev themselves gave up that idea very early on too, after the first hour, "looping" basically serve no purpose beside an explanation to "Retry mechanics in video games", I've seen all the different ways devs try to justify why you can't go outside of the edge of the world, but explaining why you can retry a level is a first Story is boring, voice acting is minimal and also B-tier, characters are non-memorable This game is basically the video game version of Mortal Kombat 1995 movie - cash grab attempt targeting Tron fans and hoping they will buy whatever junk they put out

Tron Catalyst is great and really immerses you in the world with its art style, soundtrack and even the UI feels great. The combat is fluid and should fit right in with anyone who plays any type of hack and slash/top down perspective. The story telling is a treat with some awesome and vivid artwork during conversations with other characters and the ability to ride the light cycle around the streets is a cherry on top <3

As a fan of the TRON universe, Movies, Series and all the games (Tron 2.0 the most) - I wanted to like this game. The top down camera and character designs were great but the combat felt lacking and controls on keyboard felt clunky. Wanted to play more but didnt want to miss the refund window because i wasnt sure I would actually continue to play it. Would only recommend this game when its on sale.

Gameplay, visuals, and story are all very satisfying, with a few sequences that will please any fans of Tron Legacy. If you have played and enjoyed Bithell's previous Tron Identity, rest assured Catalyst exceeds in all aspects.

The "story" is lame. The voice acting is meh. I gave it 10 hours because I wanted to like it, but it's so so so slow. No cut scenes, just static drawings that are also meh. The angle of the POV camera remains the same through the whole game, so you can only see one perspective. I love the tron franchise, but man this "game" sucks. It's not about budget. Even a low budget you could make the game great. It really comes down to the terrible writing and direction.

Part action game, part narrative, this is a well-made experience. Compelling story, decent but not great combat and most other stuff. If you're a Tron fan it's well worth it and good fun, just seems like it didn't quite reach its potential. Or maybe I'm still just longing for a Tron 2.0 sequel. Vibe is fairly similar to Tron Evolution. Again, well worth it, just mind your expectations.

This game oozes TRON. If you like TRON you should probably just play this. The narrative is clever, gameplay is fun, and the music is on point.

Favorite Bithell Game yet! The story, the vibe, the environment, all stellar. I wish we could get a full ubisoft world of the grid. Something to show the aftermath of Tron Legacy. My only critiques was that as the game progressed, I did not feel more powerful when fighting combatants, and when having to go back to recruit people it was quite a slog having to fight through the same enemies again. Effectively just light cycle to npc, talk, light cycle back, teleport, fight, talk, etc for each person you wanted to recruit. When instead it could have been woven into the story like most games have introduced this mechanic.

My... GOD.... WHAT a Great Game!!!! This game scratched an itch i didnt know i needed. It Might not be the Tron game that weve expected to see. But Bros and Brofasas, This Game is worth it. The Lore and the story are just "Chefs Kiss". The Price is i feel, Perfect... Not tooo much or too little. This game definitely made me want even more and cant wait for the Movie and/or another game to come out. Because WOW. Keep on BITHELL GAMES WITH YOUR BAD SELVES.

Awesome game! The development style of Bithell games is perfect for Tron. Every bit what I hoped for as a huge Tron fan. I highly recommend this game to any other Tron fan! Such a refreshing game to play through (took about 10-12 hours). Tron Evolution was one of my favorite games on PS3. This game strikes all the same notes but with a top down perspective. Thank you!

A huge step up from the previous game. The "Loop" mechanic is very fun and innovative. Hopefully, Jared Leto didn't just kill this franchise by getting cancelled.

Loved every bit of this game! I wish we had more time to play with the exocrafts but it really gives you every other aspect of Tron! From the lightcycle fights in the arena and outside and the combat with parrying and throwing the disks. I do wonder how many different paths you can take with looping since I'm only writing this after my first play through but this is definitely a good Tron game!

The developers of this game got the Tron Legacy aesthetic down pat! I'm only an hour in, and I've read this game is short, but I am having a blast so far. I love exploring The Grid in this game. Side note: This game works wonderfully on Linux through Proton.

I’ve only played about an hour so far, but it already seems like a total banger. Bithell Games are incredibly consistent with their games’ tonal consistency, and this one very much pulls me into the world of TRON. It’s awesome seeing a developer truly utilize all its resources while still working within their means. I love how the game’s music, writing, gameplay, and more come together into what seems like an incredibly solid package. Very much looking forward to completing it. Also, there's a skill upgrade that allows you to kill (almost) any enemy in one hit! VERY COOL!

With Bithell's involvement in the Identity an Catalyst games, one more game should be made as a follow up to these two. Since Identity is a storytelling game that is decision-based, Catalyst got to evolve from an interactive digital book into a top-down open world platformer. The 3rd game should be made into another genre format like finally entering into 3d open world with 3rd person perspective. This might be asking for too much, but I think a 3quel needs to explain how Exo's new crew could potentially escape the Arq grid and find sanctuary into a more stable server. A server that might have User intervention. Overall, this game is a vast improvement from the 1st game. Post Script: Please consider making downloadable content for this game. The content could be a new side character with a side mission.

I have a few issues with how the game is designed - but I did enjoy it overall. Pros: Diverse cast, interesting lore codex, decent combat. Cons: Characters voices sometimes didn't match the portrait, unintuitive game design on how to either progress missions or the
lightjet
portion of the game - literally running into walls on a forced camera angle. I'd probably play TRON: Identity beforehand to get a good grasp of the situation but it's built to not really need that. I sort of question the direction they made the previous protagonist take, but oh well. TRON: Endgame but I'll still recommend it.

TL;DR; if you are a Tron fan, do get this game. Otherwise you can skip it. The premise is very interesting, and I got the feeling that the game could have lean into the looping mechanic and be a lot more interesting than what it is at the moment. If you are a Tron fan, driving a lightcycle across the city and just walking around in the grid makes it worth is. Besides being in the Tron universe, the game does not have many features that differentiate it from other games.

It's not the best Tron game if you want snappy combat and a wide array of options regarding character customization. The combat system is very barebones and boring compared to Tron Evolution. It's more of a visual novel game with some dashes of action gameplay. Would not blind buy it if you're expecting a "better" Tron Evolution experience

After a full playthrough this is my overall opinion of the game: Extremely mid Both the story and characters weren't very well written and were lacking throughout pretty much the entire game. There were no dramatic highs or lows in the game and it sort of had a monotonous feel to it after a while. None of the characters were really too interesting and even the voice acting didn't really feel up to par, though some characters were better done than others. There wasn't even any well established backstory for any character including Exo, the main character, which left me feeling less attached to the character. Lastly, I felt there was an obvious DEI push with the creation of the characters and dialogue which is disappointing but not surprising given it's Disney's IP. On a more positive note, the combat mechanics, level design, and soundtracks were done nicely. I only wish there were more levels to play through as I felt literally only a handfull of levels isn't enough. The exploration for each area was alright but wasn't very rewarding especially after all of the character upgrades were unlocked. Now here's my biggest problem with this game and why I chose to dislike it rather than recommend it: The time loop mechanic that the game revolves around was executed very poorly and breaks the game after a certain point. Without spoiling any key story points in the game I'll just say this, many actions, character interactions, and events that happen should be impossible or simply never have happened because of the time loop which made the story writing come off as bad and unorganized. This all becomes more of a problem
after the first event in the Outlands and Oracle stays with you. The fact of how she manages to stay with you loop after loop is also never explained in the game.
Out of every "time loop" game I've played this probably has to be the worst one when it comes to execution. As a fan of the Tron universe I hate to leave a bad review and was really anticipating this game as nothing really great has been done with this IP since Tron: Legacy. I don't mind the top-down and artistic style that this game took but it should've had a lot more depth to it and having beat the game and side quests in only 8 hours I would recommend only buying if it's on sale.

4/10 I wanted to be gentle; it’s a small‑team indie project wearing the TRON license like a glow‑stick crown. Yet after four and a half hours I found myself actively resenting nearly every minute. I know little about TRON beyond the iconic light‑cycles that weave fatal lines of neon. I assumed an isometric action‑adventure would lean hard on that conceit. Instead, the bikes occupy perhaps five percent of the campaign, their handling stripped to perfunctory strafes and a single boost. The remaining ninety‑plus percent is spent jogging through polygonal corridors and battering reskinned enemies. The early hook is a time‑loop mechanic. Your avatar updates her code between resets, promising Metroid‑style backtracking. One locked door, one “aha” moment - I perked up. Then the real structure emerged: a strictly linear procession of waypoints. Every looped unlock is pre‑scripted, every encounter telegraphed. There are no emergent schedules a la Outer Wilds, no sandbox experimentation; the game only pretends to be clever until you realize it’s reading from a cue card. Combat flirts with dynamism - light and heavy blows, disc throws, a parry - but balance is comically off. An early upgrade turns parries into instant kills. Timing windows are generous, and a subsequent perk widens them further. Why chip through spongey enemy health bars when you can stand still, wait for an attack, and delete opponents with a single counter? Even bosses, including the final encounter, fold in one parry. Challenge, tension, victory: all evaporate. Narrative fares no better. The script leans hard on franchise jargon - users, servers, rogue programs - without rooting stakes in recognizable emotion. Characters feel like placeholders, their motivations a slurry of technobabble. I began skipping dialogue in the final hour and never felt I’d missed anything vital. The finale magnifies every flaw. You must revisit prior levels to recruit allies for a climactic showdown. Sounds epic. In practice it’s a gauntlet of loading screens, recycled hallways, and mandatory fights against the same fodder you trounced hours earlier. The game won’t let you sprint past; stray too far and objectives lock until every enemy dies. After an hour of this padding, the “allies” you painstakingly gathered do nothing while you parry‑delete the arch‑villain in a single riposte. Production values are middling. Neon vistas blur into one another, character models are serviceable but forgettable, and voice work hovers at community‑theater levels. The soundtrack hums along without leaving an impression. Yes, the price is indefensible for a sub‑five‑hour experience whose sole gimmick is squandered. Unless you collect TRON ephemera out of brand loyalty, steer clear. Great ideas sparkle at the edges, but the execution smothers them in monotony and missed opportunity.
