for those who wonder why there were so many negative reviews for a while: there was a certain song out there that caused a major uproar in the country this game was made in, and the producers planned to include the track in the V Liberty 3 pack, without knowing the potential consequenses, 2 days after the trailer, they decided to ban it and replace it with a completely different track, a remix of 1 of the Base game songs to be precise. there's still nothing that can be done about the fact they made a mistake, so for now the June 2025 ratings will still stay very low until they decided to change their responses again like i did. negativity over, here's the actual review:
i think it goes without saying that this is 1 of the best rhythm games on steam, and it was 1 of my main interests when starting on that platform. you can play about 200 different songs in the base game alone, and with all packs released so far, the total hits at around 700, which will soon be 720. i've owned the game since August 2020, and i've improved my rhythm skills by a lot during these 5 years. more about that later.
the game has massive sales which occur quite often. these sales make almost all packs 4/5 times as cheap, resulting in the Deluxe Edition costing almost less then the base-game without sale! the sales are weaker with the newer packs, which only get 15% for the newest pack, 35% for the 2nd newest, 50% for the third and 65% for 4th. but that's still more than most recent games, so they're good deals nontheless. with the full sales, you can buy every pack for around 150 euros, which is a much better deal than most other rhythm games!
if you want to know which packs to buy: Trilogy gives the highest Tracks to Cash ratio and is rather cheap, but most tracks miss a few charts. Clazziquai is ideal for if you want to start out on 8B mode having very easy charts. the Technika packs each feature great music and special charts in mission mode. the Black Square pack isn't as reccomended from the Legacy packs but can still be very enjoyable. Portable 3 features the exclusive Remix charts which are very fun to play, even if they are tough. Emotional Sense let's you practice the songs normally exclusive to the mission mode, but is actually unnecesary for 100%! just about every pack in the deluxe edition gives brandnew tracks which are of high quality. save the collabs for last as they aren't that important; but if a pack gives songs you love to play, feel free to buy them!
there are lots of gameplay videos of this game out there, and there's a guide / checklist for all the achievements, but in order to 100% the game you must own every pack minus the Gear packs, and perform some nigh-impossible feats, including clearing some missions that seem quite unreasonable, but for 60% the achievements aren't too hard to get.
as for my skill level... when i started out i had trouble clearing charts of level 8, and i was very proud of myself when i finally managed to pass an SC pattern or a level 12 chart. in 2021 my skill increased a bit, with me being able to clear a few level 14 charts & clearing multiple Technika exclusive charts. 2022 the scale got redesigned, and with the help of tier lists, i could pass a few normal scale level 15 charts. 2023 my ability in this game generally improved a lot, being able to pass charts of SC9 (at the time, comparable to new SC6) and eventually SC10 as well. 2024, before the 2.0 update which completely rehauled the level system, i've been clearing normalscale level 13 charts left and right, and was able to clear a few SC12 charts on 4B mode, as well as SC9 on 5B and 6B, and SC6/7 on 8B.
with the scaleback the 2.0 update caused, i'm still able to clear almost every SC9 chart (and half of SC10) on 4B, 60% of SC8 on 5B, a few SC9 charts on 6B, and most ~SC5 charts on 8B. so i'm ironically better with SC then Normalscale on 8B! my DJpower generally stays at around 7.8K for 4B, 7K for 5B, 7.2K for 6B, 6K for 8B. since i'm still getting better at the game, my power remains at fairly equal value, but i'm afraid that after a few more packs, i can't hit Pro DJ anymore on 5B mode & High Class on 4B... oh well, i don't have to be the master in this game!
the main issue this game has is that it's massive like you might realize. if you plan to buy it, make sure to spend about an hour doing other fun activities, so that the game can download at it's own pace.
and for those who are wondering why there's potential unsafe content, don't worry too much about it. it's primarily the 13th season that caused the issue, which focused on swimsuits; and Lena had... some "issues" during that season. no wardrobe malfunction, but she had quite a revealing swimsuit, which apparently triggered the unsafe alarm.
all in all an excellent rhythm game that i highly suggest to most people that played rhythm games in the past! it you can save at least 100GB of room on your console, that is.

The game itself is good with great collabs so overall I will recommend it. However there are some downsides too. I got it on a sale but buying the game with a decent amount of DLCs will cost a fortune. Also it's online-only and takes up too much storage. Because of these reasons, I find myself playing other rhythm games more often than not.

With my almost minuscule 5 hours in this game, I can confidently say that it is AMAZING. With such a small amount of playtime ive already managed to
- Reach Trainee 1
- Reach Level 20
- Reach Silver in Online
- Spend money on a DLC pack (Cytus)
The music/song choice in this game is very broad, and personally, I find myself enjoying playing even some of the songs I don't like. The charts are amazing, and the way the side tracks are used in charts feels right, and its a decently easy feature to get used to coming from more simple VSRG's, but drastically increases the skill ceiling and challenge of the game. All of the gears and notes feel unique and each in their own way fun and clean to play with, and the addition of the AIR and LADDER gamemodes make it much more replayable in my opinion,
In conclusion, this game is extremely fun and a nice change of pace from the simplicity of other VSRG rhythm games, offering WAY more content than most, even if some are at a price.
I got this game on sale for $10, and personally, I wouldn't spend $50 on this game. But if you've got some extra money, and know youll come back to it over and over, it might be for you. I reccomend waiting for a sale though

DJMax Respect V, developed by Rocky Studio and published by Neowiz, is a standout rhythm game that skillfully blends a rich musical library with precise, engaging gameplay mechanics, creating a rewarding experience for both newcomers and veteran rhythm game enthusiasts. As the latest main entry in the long-running DJMax series, Respect V not only honors its legacy with an impressive roster of songs spanning various genres—ranging from electronic and pop to rock and jazz—but also modernizes the experience with crisp visuals, a smooth interface, and expanded online features. The game’s core gameplay centers on timing and accuracy, challenging players to hit notes synchronized with complex, pulsating tracks, where speed, pattern recognition, and reflexes are put to the test.
One of the game’s greatest strengths is its extensive content. With over 160 tracks at launch, including iconic fan favorites and new compositions, players have a vast, varied soundtrack that caters to diverse musical tastes. The songs are beautifully presented with vibrant background animations and effects that amplify the energetic vibe without distracting from the gameplay. Multiple difficulty modes and note patterns ensure accessibility for beginners while offering intense challenges for experts seeking to push their skills. The inclusion of a variety of input options—from keyboard and controllers to specialized rhythm game hardware—further broadens its appeal.
Visually, Respect V impresses with sharp, colorful menus and stage designs that capture the futuristic, cybernetic aesthetic the series is known for. The UI is clean and intuitive, allowing players to navigate modes, customize their experience, and track stats with ease. The game’s online multiplayer and competitive modes bring a vibrant community aspect, offering ranked matches and leaderboards that motivate continual improvement. Additionally, the mission modes and unlockables provide meaningful progression, encouraging repeated play and mastery of challenging songs.
That said, DJMax Respect V isn’t without minor flaws. Some players have noted occasional balancing issues in song difficulties and a steep learning curve that might overwhelm casual players. The story mode and single-player campaign elements feel minimal compared to other rhythm games, focusing more on score chasing than narrative depth. Moreover, while the online features are robust, the player base can sometimes feel fragmented due to the niche genre and region-locking limitations.
In conclusion, DJMax Respect V stands as a compelling and polished entry in the rhythm game genre, offering a comprehensive package of music, challenge, and style. Its deep tracklist, responsive gameplay, and strong community features make it an essential experience for fans of music games seeking both nostalgic hits and fresh compositions. Though it leans more toward competitive and skill-based play, its addictive rhythms and sleek presentation ensure it remains accessible and enjoyable, securing its place as a modern classic in rhythm gaming.

I'm deeply disappointed by your decision to collaborate with a group that once illegally copied your game and insulted its quality.
As a long-time fan of the DJMAX series and Neowiz, this feels like a betrayal and an insult to the community that has supported you through thick and thin.
Partnering with those who tried to undermine your work is not just puzzling — it's hurtful.
Please reconsider what this means to the fans who truly respect your legacy.
-abstract
fucking trash collaborate with the group steal and insult Neowiz game.
you guys want to cooperate who tried to kill you???
So disappointing decision and this is a harsh assault to all fans of DJ MAX series and Neowiz.

i've only really just started the game, so I'm still getting used to simply how it's played. Using multiple fingers on each hand is a big change from my usual rhythm game play style. So far, tho, I'm liking the music & I love all the different things you can unlock without having to pay extra. Gives me a reason to keep playing songs other than simply the challenge of full combo... err, Max Combo, I guess.

This is a very solid rhythm game that is unfortunately being held back by a DLC monetization system that would make Paradox Interactive have a run for their money.
While buying the base game is fine since there is an AIR mode which lets you play a rotating selection of songs at random (however you can't save your score or have any kind of meaningful progression in the process), the song selection in the FreeStyle mode (which is probably the main game mode aside from multiplayer) is extremely limited, which is why I recommend people to buy the game during a very heavy sale (or better yet, buy it both on sale *and* only a few DLCs at a time, just so you can dip your toes and see if the game is to your liking without shelling out crazy bucks into it).

i got this on sale for about 6 pounds, this game has honestly changed my life but saying that i wouldn't buy it unless its on sale. i'm completely and utterly absolutely OBSESSED with it. i don't think i've ever been as obsessed with a game in my life. i'm not usually a rhythm game person bar maybe a couple hours on geometry dash and muse dash. the game is a little bit confusing at first and i didn't know where to start but the ui is generally pretty easy to use and get the hang of. a lil tip F11 helps you change the theme to your profile.
the base game generally has a lot of songs that range in difficulty. 1 star being the easiest and 15 stars being the hardest. each song has different difficulty levels, normal, hard, maximum and sc. each song also has different button ranges, 4b, 5b, 6b, 8b.

i really, really, really like this game. it's so polished and stylish, and has FANTASTIC music. it is a bit expensive, but i feel like you get what you pay for, over something like osu! mania or other alternatives. for djmax, you're paying for the custom music videos, the amazing original songs, and the polish that comes with a dedicated team of charters. as someone who loves rhythm games but isn't very hardcore, this is probably my favorite rhythm game of all time. highly recommend.

Now that I have (surprisingly) 100 hours on this game I can say that I recommend it. I don't play a huge variety of rhythm games so most of my time in the genre was with Muse Dash (around 50 hours iirc) and a little bit of Groove Coaster. With that being said 4 lane rhythm games always scared me because of how complex they look. So when this game was on gamepass I tried it and the same day gave up. Thought that it wasn't for me. a couple of years later I bought the game out of boredom because of a sale and got the muse dash DLC to encourage me to play more. That worked! I kept playing and slowly I got better. I've never been confident in my abilities and always felt like I stagnate when I play games. With DJ Max after awhile I could noticeably see that songs I struggled with a month before were pretty easy. This isn't to say that im a really good player (id say maybe intermediate). With me seeing most of the post online being people perfect playing a SC difficulty it does make me feel like im bad at the game. But the cool ui, various genres of music, and hidden story really helped with keeping my interest and gave me that Emotional Sense (I had to im sorry). I will mention the biggest flaw of the game that most other reviews also comment on. Respect V is and always online game for anti piracy. This fact sucks because of the fact that when the servers shut down all the money that the community has spent will be down the drain. I have optimism that when it is time that the devs will let it be played offline (though i could be early coping). If this fact kills your interest in this game then thats totally fair (you might be interested in the ps4 version under the same name but without the V but I won't go into the differences here). OK after a lot of rambling I can say that YES I can recommend DJMax for anyone. If you're a seasoned Rhythm game player or if you have never touched one in your life. The devs clearly love this game so we will be set for awhile! Happy Breaking!!!!!!

I came back to this after a few years. The controls were somehow all broken and needed to be reset. The menu system feels more complicated now somehow, which is a feat sense it was already pretty special as it was.
The game file size is 70-something gigabytes now, so make sure there is plenty of space on your computer.
Great carpal tunnel syndrome simulator.

After realizing that Sound Voltex music sucks after buying a Faucetwo I decided to try out this game using that control and dam is it satisfying. After 30 Hours I can do up to 3-4 SC Difficulty but still have trouble with some MX Difficulty as Im currently trying hard to pass Daydream.
Best of all, most of the music is playable and a good chunk of it is quite good.
Personally I like: Groove Coaster, Muse Dash, Clazziquai, Deemo, Portable 3 PACK, V LIBERTY and All of the EXTENSION PACKS.
Just remember to purchase when its on sale because you will most likely be buying most of the DLC.

Mania, like all rhythm games, is hard to get into if you've never played one before. However this game in particular is one of the easier ones. The judgement window is less punishing compared to other games in the genre like Quaver or Osu. However, there is absolutely zero user created content, and the dlc price is extremely expensive. If you plan to buy this, then you must wait for a sale, otherwise there is no reason to get this at all over free options. If you are new to rhythm games, the mania type in particular, DO NOT BUY. Go get Quaver instead, and see if this type of rhythm game is even for you.
If you have all the dlc, I would give this a solid 7.5/10. If not, then don't even bother purchasing, since there is a severe lack of content to play.

Keysounded songs, ASIO support, banger songs, professionally made charts.
In my opinion, this game and most of its DLCs are worth purchasing even when there are free to play rhythm games.

TBH the game is alright but the amount of dlc you need to pay for, for decent songs is pretty expensive. I would rather just have bought a IIDX controller from the beginning and played either infinitas or a clone of it instead. I have a set up now but now im down money for 2 games instead of one. Still a decent game if you want to get into it.

would have been a glowing review of a great way to enter the rhythm game scene, but in swoops a server maintenance. No freeplay mode for you! It isn't like the free play score contributes to your ranking online either, since that's a separate mechanic: the Ladder Match. (which has a bit of a dumb grading system imo but who cares.)

Really fun game.
Good like easy to get into, pleasing visual, really good library, collab and different options like 4k, 5k, 6, and 8k with all difficulties to play.
Flaws like always online, crappy anti cheat, monetizing, weird decision and microtransaction.
I don't know what on earth is going on but for the love of god can both of you shut up
it's just a god damn game.
and have some common sense, cyber bullying, copying/stealing someone works, fighting over some fandom and people who did not want to be involved in the first place and even worse scenario that I did not even mention.
PLEASE FREAKING CALM DOWN, ALL OF YOU. BE REASONABLE.

This game is ruining my life, and probably my hands. I've been on the hunt for a good arcade-style rhythm game that can be played without peripherals for a while, and now that I've found it I'm absolutely hooked. 10/10 gameplay and a really excellent music selection with plenty of genre variety. Incredibly tight controls, with very fair feeling judgement timings. And with the assortment of different missions and gameplay modes I've found that there's always another mountain to climb after I master whatever I was working on last. The music videos in the background are a nice touch too, and most are clearly pretty high-effort. My only gameplay complaint is that some of the note skins trail a little too heavily to be easily readable on some of the dense patterns at higher speeds and difficulties (I've run monitor tests and can confirm this isn't ghosting), but after some trial and error I've found a few skins I'm happy with rotating through. Would love to have a settings bar to tweak those down a bit. Otherwise I've had no issues with dialing in my settings on a mid-tier setup; I thought I had some other graphics issues for a while that were making charts hard to read, but it turns out it was just a bad note skin choice combined with a need to git gud.
All of that being said, this game commits every possible sin of modern gaming. $60 for the base game with 70%+ of the game's content gated behind hundreds of dollars of DLC? Check. Paid battlepass system? Check. In-game microtransactions? Check. Still, I can't bring myself not to love it. And luckily for your wallet, the base game and DLC all go on steep sales a few times a year, so I recommend waiting to buy it until one of those. I think I ended up paying ~$65 for the base game and most of the non-crossover DLCs, and then another ~$80 for all of the other DLC content available at the time? Still probably too much, but I can already tell this will be a multi-hundred hour game for me so I can justify the investment to an extent, and I've really enjoyed most of the DLC content I've played.
Also, a word of warning that this game's a little goonery (especially some of the crossover DLCs, looking at you Girls Frontline) so play around others with moderate caution if you care about people seeing your shameful anime waifu video games.
One parting piece of advice if you bothered to read all of that rambling: turn your speed up as soon as you feels comfortable with the controls. The default note speed is pretty much unplayable at anything beyond the lowest difficulties. Try and work up to at least 5.0 IMO, I found that going as high as I can tolerate has massively improved my scores. There's also a really good achievement guide in the community tab that has a lot of helpful tips to get started, and explains a bunch of wacky hidden achievements you would almost certainly never get without a lot of trial and error. Anyways, time to get back to annoying my partner with endless hours of rhythmic mechanical keyboard clacking, have fun DJMaxing folks.
Also, 69 hours lol.
