I've just finished the game. Immediately, I rushes here to leave a review of the game to capture the rawest emotions that I currently have. So lemme just start by saying this is the most unique, daring game I've played in the last decade and the most satisfying. The story is amazing and more than makes up for any shortcomings in the puzzle aspect of the game.
Let's start with the story, I believe it is truly top-notch and acts as an interesting study on relationships. It will really hit home for most male players (like me) as you progress throughout the story. You can play arcade games, talk to the people who come in and out of the bar, chat with the bartender, use the restroom, drink different types of drinks and even text people on your cell phone. The way you get to know your friends and the other bar patrons is great. With each character having their own personality and their own take on the world gets you to come back to talk to them everyday. I also feel genuine worry when things happen to Vincent and I get driven to the next level, next scene, next stage, just to see what will happen. I feel it is awesome when a game does that and is definitely a bonus point for me in this game.
Now the actual nightmares are where the majority of the gameplay happens and is, more or less, one big, giant, very frustrating puzzle. With every stage comes levels and with every level comes choices. The choices you pick should reflect who you are and sway the "karma system" from one side to the other. After these choices, you go to the next level, in which, your answer to the choices gets uploaded to the internet and you can see how others replied to those same choices. Once, you reach the final level, a "boss battle" occurs and you essentially have to reach the top of the puzzle building to win. Seems pretty easy eh? Haha...
These puzzles become very, very brutal the higher you get up, and I immediately regret picking normal difficulty on my first playthrough. It is hard, relentless even and makes me feel like I'm genuinely stupid most of the time. As you progress the blocks fall faster, the puzzles get more complicated, and "trick" blocks will make things even harder (some blocks are covered in ice which you will slide right over, others have spikes that shoot out and kill you, some even explodes). These trick blocks need to be both avoided and used to your advantage, and the game does a fantastic job of providing puzzles which test the limits of your critical thinking, and I failed many times. There's a point in the game where I completely gave up after dying for over 25 times and I had to look up a guide on Youtube only to realize how "simple" the solution to the puzzle.
With that said, this game is great. It is fun, exciting, and intriguing. It will bend your mind and boost your adrenaline. In my opinion all gamers should pick it up, regardless of genre preference. Catherine boasts a fantastic story, great pacing, top-notch voice acting, spectacular game play and solid replay value. This will be one of the few times where I confidently say I won't hesitate to come back in the future just to get a different ending! Or maybe I'll wait for the Full Body to get ported to PC, I know you can make that happen Atlus.
P.S. I got the
"True Cheater" ending on my first playthrough and lemme just say I would conquer hell and heaven if I have a wife like Catherine by my side.
