Firstly, I would like to say that I don’t believe in objectivity when it comes to art. No piece of media is “objectively bad” in my opinion, there is always someone who will appreciate something that could be considered bad or poorly made.
That being said, I despise this video game. For me 'Silent Hill: Homecoming' fundamentally misunderstands everything that made the original Silent Hill special while spitting on the face of Silent Hill 2 and the direction that it tried to take the franchise.
For me, this is not a Silent Hill game. It lacks the skeleton of the gameplay, the atmosphere and quality of the originals' level design, and the well crafted story and themes of the classics (not to say how less subtle everything is, I swear Alex broke my immersion by how much on your face his dialogues are when inspecting his house). Not everything in this game sucks, I would argue that sometimes it introduces a nice element or theme to the narrative, and levels like the Otherworld version of the Shepherd House are pretty good actually. Some puzzles are okay, I guess, but I barely really had to do any mental effort for like 90% of the game.
This doesn’t feel like a main entry in the franchise, but rather a tie-in game inspired by the movie (now that I think about it, this would explain the bad quality of the overall product). For me, every enemy design sucks and it’s purely there for shock value, this game has a fricking boss designed like the “Human Centipede”! They don’t fit in with the rest of the classic's roster of enemies and the bosses feel like they came from a different type of game altogether (like the doll boss that looks directly cut from a horror version of Dark Souls).
This game is also really raw and brutal in ways that take away the surrealist and otherworldly vibe of Silent Hill. It feels like it took more inspiration from Saw or Hostel than from Silent Hill, which leaves a bad taste in my mouth everytime I see it. Also, most NPCs' feels so forced to the point of even ruining the actual good ones. The highlights for me were the moments with your parents and Deputy Wheeler (the absolute GOAT).
In the end, I hate this game and think it’s a miserable experience that goes against everything that made me love Silent Hill. The steam port is also an absolute broken mess, but my experience playing on the PS3 was pretty buggy as well… the only difference is that it was just playable and beatable, the same almost can’t be said for the steam version. I’d recommend you to stay miles away from this game and play the better titles instead. But if you do play it and actually enjoy it, good for you. As I said, I can see value in some aspects of the game and I don’t think this is an objectively bad piece of media, but I do consider it to be bad and poorly made in my personal opinion.
I hate it and I can’t stand it. That's it.
